1 Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics: Re-Organizing the Role of COIA as Faculty Stewards of Intercollegiate Athletics on Our Campuses, within Conferences, & at the NCAA 12 th Annual National Meeting San Diego State University February 20-22, 2015

2 COIA Background Formed in 2002 as an alliance of NCAA Division IA faculty senates COIA’s “goal is to preserve and enhance the contributions athletics can make to academic life by addressing longstanding problems in college sports that undermine those contributions. University of Arkansas was founding/early member 64 member universities (mostly FBS) 42 representatives at the 12 th annual meeting in San Diego Structure – chair, steering committee, university representatives

3 Presenters and Topics 1.Bob Malekoff (University of North Carolina) – Lessons to be drawn from UNC, and other violations of academic integrity: How faculty can be a part of solutions to the problem. 2.Azure Davey (NCAA) – NCAA Governance Structure and Academic Misconduct (A working conversation with the NCAA on Academic Misconduct: Current and Future Priorities of Policy) 3.Kelly Withy (University of Hawaii), Adrien Bouchet (University of Tulsa), & Mike Miranda (NCAA) – The character of faculty participation in campus athletics governance: COIA research results 4.Gerry Gurney, Donna Lopiano, and Alan Sack (The Drake Group – Update on a possible Presidential Commission on Reforming Intercollegiate Athletics 5.The future of COIA: Organization and Leadership Issues (working groups)

7 Restructuring COIA Proposal: Steering Committee (7) Chair Student Athlete Welfare Chair Academic Integrity Chair Administration & Communications Chair 2 At-largeVice Chair

8 Restructuring COIA Proposal: Other The Chair and Vice Chair will be elected to 5 year terms. Elections will be held during the annual COIA meetings as needed. Committee chairs will be volunteers or recruits from the membership. Each university will appoint 1 (or 2) representative(s) to COIA’s governing body. Request that member Senates make appointments are for 3-5 years (preferably 5). – All COIA representatives not on the Steering Committee will self-identify one of the three primary standing committees on which they will serve. – All newly appointed representatives will be provided with an introductory package of information that includes COIA’s best practices white papers.
