Luke 19:1-10 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.’ So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, ‘He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.’ But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.’

Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 The issue of Koinonia - reviewed Ancient Greek word fellowship, association, community, communion joint participation, a gift jointly contributed Use 19 times in the New Testament 1. 5 Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 The 5 ‘conversations’ of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew The first is the Sermon on the Mount The second is his instructions to his 12 disciples The third is a Parabolic discourse The Sower; The Weeds and the Wheat; The Mustard Seed and The Leaven The Hidden Treasure; The Pearl of Great Price; The Dragnet The fourth is the discourse on the Church The fifth is the Olivet Discourse (end-times)

Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 Jesus’ discourse on the Church – Matthew 18 Matthew 18:15-20 ‘If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that “every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.” If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. ‘Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.’ ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. ‘Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.’

Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 Jesus’ discourse on the Church – Matthew 18 Matthew 7:3-5 “And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” We should examine each other Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Such an examination requires: Intimacy Courage Unity Trust Respect

Matthew 21:28-32 ‘What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, “Son, go and work today in the vineyard.” ‘“I will not,” he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. ‘Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, “I will, sir,” but he did not go. 'Which of the two did what his father wanted?’ ‘The first,’ they answered. Jesus said to them, ‘Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10

Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 Matthew 21:23 “Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him.” Jesus was a master includer of people Our circle of inclusion will govern our influence Inclusion is not evangelism Inclusion is not just an act Inclusion is an attitude of character

Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 Romans 2:4 “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?” Repentance: [Greek] metanoia = change of mind Two words: meta = transfer / change noia = perception / thinking / understanding

Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 “The goodness of God leads to change” “The goodness of God leads to goodness in men. Any true goodness in this world is because of the goodness of God. The good done in this world is done through the influence of God and His righteousness.” A. W. Pink - “The Attributes of God” James 1:17 “Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” Psalm 107:9 “For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”

Part Three Goodness and Metanoia Luke 19:1-10 A simple act of inclusion leads people to change Kindness creates a gap in humanity Luke 19:5 “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
