3 Algebra I – The Gatekeeper California students fail Algebra I at extraordinarily high rates. In 2006-07, an expected 40% of the state’s 9 th graders will need to repeat the course. 4 SUMMER ALGEBRA ACADEMIES Research tells us that freshmen: - are fearful of high school facility - need an adult figure to mentor them - seek advice about college/careers from teacher - turn to parents for advice about college

5 SUMMER ALGEBRA ACADEMIES Research tells us that freshmen (cont): - don’t understand the importance of 9 th grade - under-perform in their classes - a significant portion fail 9 th grade algebra -many students do not complete homework

6 SUMMER ALGEBRA ACADEMIES Research tells us that freshmen (cont): - watch over 25 hours of television per week - spend about 5 hours on homework per week - parents give students less than 1 hour (38 minutes) of undivided attention per week
