In contrast to the “doctrines of demons” that nourished some (4:1), what nourished Timothy? (4:6) What is involved in exercise, discipline and training? Timothy was to train in what? (4:7) Of what benefit is exercise in godliness? (4:8) Thought question: Do we spend time exercising ourselves to godliness? More time in bodily exercise? (4:7b, 4:8)

5 1 Timothy 4:1-16 4:6-16 Instructions to Timothy Questions:

6 1 Timothy 4:1-16 4:1-5 Doctrines of demons
(4:1) What does “the Spirit speaketh expressly” imply about the Spirit? The Spirit is a being, not a “force” (John 16:13-15) The Spirit guided men in words (1 Corinthians 1:13) Note: The Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4) (4:1) How many true “faiths” are there? Some would leave “the faith” There is “one faith” (Ephesians 4:5) We should contend earnestly for “the faith” (Jude 3)

7 1 Timothy 4:1-16 4:1-5 Doctrines of demons
(4:1) While man might not think it a “big deal” for a church to teach that people should not marry and that they should abstain from certain foods that God created, what does the Spirit think about those doctrines? Jesus described the act of teaching our own doctrines as “vain worship.” (Matthew 15:9) When you boil it all down, any doctrine that is not from God is from the devil. Does it matter what we teach? (Matthew 15:14)

8 1 Timothy 4:1-16 4:6-16 Instructions to Timothy
(4:6) Was it commendable or reprehensible for Timothy to teach in specifics with regard to the false teachings of verse 3? The aim of following God’s teaching is to save ourselves and others. (4:16) We can emphasize any Truth without minimizing God’s grace. (Titus 2:11-15)
