1 PACE Professional and Career Enhancement System Student Guide

2 What is PACE? PACE gives you the edge in employability: Collate personal, career and academic achievements Assess & demonstrate your skills Define personal & career goals Build CVs from specialized templates Collate all employability evidence in e-Portfolios and share The PACE system is an interactive tool to support Ulster students and graduates to develop employability skills.

3 Logging In To log in you will need your student number (B00124356) and password. There are two methods of logging into PACE. The first is to go directly to http://pace.ulster.ac.uk as shown.http://pace.ulster.ac.uk The second is to log in to the University Portal http://portal.ulster.ac.uk and click on the PACE logo.http://portal.ulster.ac.uk Once logged in you will be able to see the top navigation bar. ”I will now take you through and explain each section.”

4 myProfile Once logged in it is a good idea to immediately update your profile. This includes all of the above sections. These will be helpful when you begin to develop your CV and e-Portfolios. To edit these simply click on the green button on each page. This will prompt another window that you can fill in with your specific details. When editing your Personal Details it is a good idea to add a photo of yourself, or if you prefer, a photo linked to your degree.

5 myProfile This page allows you to review and add to the list of professional and academic qualifications that will be displayed to employers, in your e-Portfolio. Click on and fill in your details.

6 myProfile Click on and fill in your details. This page allows you to review and add to the list of work experience and student placements that will be displayed to employers, in your e-Portfolio.

7 myProfile This page allows you to review and add to the list of extra curricular interests that will be displayed to employers, in your e-Portfolio. Click on and fill in your details.

8 myProfile This page allows you to review and add to the list of personal and professional achievements that will be displayed to employers, in your e-Portfolio. Click on and fill in your details.

9 myProfile This page allows you to review and add to the list of professional and academic publications that will be displayed to employers, in your e-Portfolio. Click on and fill in your details.

10 myProfile This page allows you to review and add to the list of professional and academic conferences, which have accepted a paper or article with you as a named author, that will be displayed to employers, in your e-Portfolio. Click on and fill in your details.

11 Preferences Once you have updated your profile, you should have entered two different email accounts, your university and personal accounts. The Preferences section allows you to personalise your PACE experience. Choose your Preferred Email Account.

12 myDashboard This is your PACE Dashboard that lets you administer your account and give you shortcut buttons to access material that requires your attention.

13 myDashboard All news stories from the PACE system are displayed here, use an articles 'view' operation to see its details. The news is also displayed and updated on your Welcome page.

14 myDashboard This area lists all your received messages, e.g. messages to alert you about course events, organised by your Course Team. Use the view operation to see the message, in detail. Use the remove operation to delete a message.

15 myDashboard This page holds your PACE Schedule. It displays events organized by your course team, to enhance your employability, so check your schedule regularly. You can also add your own appointments and PACE Events that you may wish to attend. When adding appointments you have the option of having an e-mail alert.

16 myDashboard Cross-campus PACE employabilty events are displayed on this page. You can use this page to view them and, if you feel that they would be relevant to you, you can add them to your personal employability schedule. If you add an event to your schedule, PACE will send you an e-mail reminder, two days in advance of the event.

17 myDashboard This section allows you to review, as well as add to, the files in your PACE account. As you have created these files they 'showcase' your employability. You can add files manually, here, or you can supply files as evidence of personal and professional skills. Either way, these files will appear in the Showcase section of your e-Portfolio, where they will demonstrate your personal and professional competence. Showcase Web Sites section allows you to review, as well as add to, the web sites (URLs) in your PACE account. This is particularly useful if you have on line material that will act as a showcase for your employability.

18 myProgramme This section holds details about your course team. Details include, their room number, e-mail and a message that can be updated regularly to provide you with additional information. Your course team can supply you with websites and downloadable resources that will be helpful during your course.

19 myProgramme This area displays any websites your Course Team recommends to you.

20 myProgramme This page displays the files that your Course Team want you to download and review. In addition you can submit either a modified version of these files or your own files so that your course team can assess them and so that they can be included in your e-portfolio.

21 myProgramme This section allows you to request meetings with members of your course team. Records of these meetings act as a pointer, to further work and planning to enhance your employability. Click on. A list of your team will appear. Click the operation show below and a form will appear for you to complete.

22 myProgramme Meeting records detail any formal discussions, or tutorials, you may have, regarding you professional and personal competence, with your Course Team.

23 myProgramme This page displays your academic record to date.

24 myDevelopment To enhance your employability, it is essential to audit and enhance your competence in certain key skills. Remember to add evidence to support your claims of competency!

25 myDevelopment To enhance your employability, you need to define your personal, professional and career goals and, then, construct action plans to deliver those goals. These goals can be personal goals, career goals, academic goals or, for undergraduates, specific student placement goals. Once you have defined a goal, use the Plan Actions section of PACE to develop a plan to attain it.

26 myDevelopment Journals are a valuable employability asset, in that they allow you to accumulate evidence of your personal, academic and professional experiance. Use this page to create and manage journals that will hold your journal entries. Your journal can, then, be included in your e-Portfolio, as evidence of your employability. Reviewing your journals also allows you to reflect on what you have learnt and how it will be pertinent to your future employment.

27 myDevelopment Knowing your learning style is a way to help improve your learning performance. By discovering your individual approach to learning you will be able to: Seek out experience that draw on the strengths of your approaches. Make a conscious attempt to develop your skills at other approaches to learning. Complete the online, self-scoring VARK Questionnaire (link provided) to give you an insight into your own learning and study. Once completed click on and input your result. This can, then, be added to your e-Portfolio to advise your Course Team

28 myCareer This is where you will create and modify your CV. A variety of templates exist and can be edited very easily. Remember to download and customize your CV for each application, before uploading it to the PACE CV store! When applying for jobs/placements you can store your covering letters and applications in the appropiate sections for reference later. Psychometric Tests are also provided. Practice with these as many employers now use psychometric testing as part of their selection procedure. Each page contains specific advice from GradNAV.

29 myCareer This area is for saving copies of all the CVs that you create.

30 myCareer Every CV or application form sent by post needs to have a covering letter. PACE allows you to store and adapt these covering letters.

31 myCareer This area is for saving copies of all the Job Applications that you create, so that you can draw on them, again, for future job applications.

32 myCareer Here you can save notes on interviews you have taken. These can be used to prepare for upcoming interviews.

33 myCareer This area allows you to store the critical personal statement that will headline your e-Portfolio!

34 myCareer This section is about determining your aptitude for specific types of career. Many employers use psychometric testing as part of their selection procedures. Look at your test results to determine your strengths and use them as a guide as to what jobs to apply for. You may also wish share your results with your Course Team by copying the test result URL, storing it as a showcase website, under the 'MyDashboard' tab and including it in your e-Portfolio.

35 myPlacement Work Experience contains valuable information from GradNAV. Work & Learn ILink showcases work experience and studying abroad. Placement Opportunites contains a news feed directed at placement students and useful links to work experiance opportunities in Careers Connect and Opus.

36 Vacancies Vacancies displays links to online systems that will assist you in your search for graduate employment. CDC Website details the news, events and other resources that are provided to current, international, prospective and research students, allowing them to enhance their employability.

37 myPortfolios This page allows you to view example portfolios and create your own. Click on Add Portfolio and the image to the right will appear. Fill this in and click on save to create a portfolio. Once created use the operations shown below to edit it.

38 myPortfolios When you wish to submit or share your portfolio, go to the Portfolios page and select the 'Send' operation shown above.Remember, you can still add to a shared portfolio but a submitted portfolio is closed for assesment Enter an e-mail address and choose to either 'share' or 'submit' your Portfolio. If you are sharing an e-Portfolio with an employer you can specify how long they should have access to it Previous shares and submissions will be shown at the bottom of the screen.

39 myPortfolios This screen shows you all portfolios that you have shared to other PACE users.

40 myPortfolios This screen shows you all portfolios that you have submitted to other PACE users.

41 myPortfolios This section lists portfolios that have been shared with you by other PACE users, including example portfolios, such as the one below.

42 PACE Help If this guide is not in depth enough you can find a section called Trails on the Welcome page. This can be visited at any time to see demonstrations on important aspects of the PACE System. Every web page on the PACE System also has a Help button that provides guidance for the page you are currently viewing. If the Help section does not answer your question, you may want to send an email to our PACE team. To do this click on Get Support at the bottom of the page.
