15. Safer Internet plus – 2008 call INFO DAY 15 CALL 2008 - Hotline Purpose: allowing the citizen to report illegal content such as child abuse images, illegal adult pornography and racism. To pass the reports on to the appropriate body for action (ISP, police or correspondent hotline). Their role is distinct from that of the law enforcement, since they do not investigate offences, arrest or prosecute offenders.

Safer Internet plus – 2008 call INFO DAY 16 CALL 2008 - Hotline Some typical tasks: Set up a facility for online reporting of illegal content and activity on the internet and new online technologies. Deal rapidly with complaints received. Draw up a manual of procedures in cooperation with law enforcement authorities. Exchange information on illegal content with European network. Participate in networking nationally and at European level. Promote the hotline to the general public and to decision-makers (industry, law enforcement, politicians and officials, child welfare organisations).

Issues to address: content considered unsuitable for children, such as Racism and xenophobia, pornography, child sexual abuse, violence, bullying and harassment, grooming, use of peer-to-peer services, broadband video, instant messaging, chat rooms, social networking sites, mobile phones (e.g. “Happy slapping”), game consoles

Communication Plan. Promote visibility and press coverage of the campaigns including traditional media (press, radio, TV). Use multiplier organisations, electronic dissemination channels, mass media, schools, Internet Cafés etc. Events including national/local events for Safer Internet Day. Project web site: find information about the activities of the awareness node, download awareness tools.

19. Safer Internet plus – 2008 call INFO DAY 19 CALL 2008 - helpline Purpose: Children can talk about disturbing content and uncomfortable experiences related to online technologies. Offer one-to-one conversations with trained helpers in real time (phone or online). Set up a helpline in conjunction with experienced organizations with the necessary infrastructure, e.g. organizations already running child helplines. A proposal from a helpline must be made in partnership with an awareness node.

20. Safer Internet plus – 2008 call INFO DAY 20 CALL 2008 - helpline Typical tasks: Answer calls from children related to their use of online technologies. Inform the public, promote the helpline. Disseminate the results, do statistics (e.g. number of calls, issues raised). Discuss results with experts on an ongoing basis.
