As we all know, animal cloning has been the concern of science community and also the subject of scientific experiments for years. What uses does it have?

Other uses?

Fast reading Go through the passage as quickly as possible and try to find answers to the three questions in part A on Page42.

1. Both 2. Dolly. 3. Anti-cloning.

True or False 1.People all over the world are happy about the idea of cloning human beings. 2.Dolly, the first cloned mammal, is exactly the same as other sheep. 3.According to the article, the scientist who created Dolly does not agree with cloning human beings. F Not all people F T Not exactly

4.Cloning can be used to cure diseases because it can produce new tissues and organs. 5.Colin Jake is against cloning humans, just like Pauline Carter. 6.Cloning human beings is illegal in many countries, so no scientists want to clone human beings. T F Not like F A few scientists

Reading strategy: Understanding scientific terms 1.Read the first and last paragraphs for an idea of what the article is about. 2.Scan the body of the article. Circle the words you don’t know. 3.Read through the article a few times.

Fill in the form(Detailed Reading) Pro-cloningAnti-cloning 1.Produce valuable tissues and organs that could be used to save human lives 2.Cure diseases like cancer 3.Help those who are unable to have children 4.Help those who want to clone their dead children 1.May produce a real- life Frankenstein ’ s monster 2.Create more disease in the animal world 3.Cloning shows no respect for humans 4.Human life would no longer be unique 5.Having fewer babies to reduce population, not cloning more

Detailed Reading 1.What are the different attitudes towards the success of cloning a human cell? 2.What does Ian Wilmut, the Scottish scientist who created Dolly, intend to use cloning for? 3.Who are the three persons in the article related to cloning?

1.What are the different attitudes towards the success of cloning a human cell? Valuable tissues and organs can be produced and be used to save human lives. Human beings may be on the way to producing a real-life monster. Some people consider cloning human embryos with the intention to destroy them shows no respect for human life.

2.What does Ian Wilmut, the Scottish scientist who created Dolly, intend to use cloning for? He thinks research efforts should be concentrated on creating new tissues and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer.

3.Who are the three persons in the article related to cloning? Ian Wilmut, a Scottish scientist who created Dolly and was shocked when hearing some scientists were considering cloning human beings. He never intends to create copy of humans. Instead, he thinks the efforts of scientists should be directed towards creating new cells and organs that could eventually be used to cure diseases like cancer.

Faye Wilson, a woman of 41 years old who cannot have a baby. She is desperate to have a baby of his own, a child that is genetically related to her. Severino Antinori, an Italian doctor, who is one of the leaders in the cloning research. He has declared that he wants to be the first to clone a human being.

Reading comprehension: 1.The announcement of successful human embryo cloning has caused much debate because________. A. people still have no clear idea about the results of human cloning B. valuable tissues and organs can be used to save humans C. mankind is going to produce terrible monsters D. people know that nature will punish mankind for human cloning A

2.The success of the cloned sheep Dolly has proved that_________. A. cloning will create more diseases in animal world B. cloned animals will die at a much younger age than normal C. man has been able to produce an exact copy from an adult cell D. man can interfere with nature at his will C

3.According to the passage, what is the real intention of Ian Wilmut’s cloning research? A. To create copies of humans in the end. B. To destroy human embryos in the end. C. To create new tissues or organs for sale. D. To cure deadly diseases eventually. D

4. How does a woman who cannot give a birth benefit from cloning? A. She can have a baby by using another woman’s egg. B. She can have a baby genetically related to her. C. She can adopt someone else’s child by cloning. D. She can have more children. B

5. What can we infer from the whole passage? A. Cloning animals is illegal in Italy. B. Chinese scientists are trying to benefit mankind by using cloning technology. C. Chinese scientists want to be the first to clone a human baby. D. Colin Jake disagrees with the scientists who want to clone a human baby. B

Read the text and find out the main idea of each paragraph. Para 1 Para 2 Para 3 An announcement about the first cloned human embryo caused much debate. The first cloned mammal was Dolly. Ian Wilmut is shocked that some scientists are considering cloning human beings.

Para 4 Para 5 Para 6 A woman wants to have a cloned baby. Cloning human embryos is illegal in many countries, but some scientists still want to clone human beings. Chinese scientists continue to research ways in which cloning can benefit mankind.

Part D. E Check the answers D 1 b 2 a 3 d 4 e 5 c 6 g 7 h 8 f E 1 cloning 2 cell 3 successfully 4 immoral 5 right 6 consequences 7 younger 8 humans 9 laws 10 Italian

Consolidation Fill in the blanks with proper words according to the reading material.

Student: Is it true that the first human embryo have been (1)_________ cloned? Scientist: It’s true. Student : What do you think of it? Scientist: I think it can produce (2)______ tissues and organs that could be used to save human lives. However, some scientists think (3)________. They believe cloning human embryos may (4)________ with nature and be on the way to (5)_____ a real-life Frankenstein’s monster. Student: Well, would you please explain cloning in details to me? successful valuable differently interfere producing

Scientist: Yes. Cloning is producing an exact copy of a plant or an animal using its cells. You are very familiar with the cloned sheep Dolly. In (6)_______, the wonderful scientific (7)__________ was praised. Student: Can you give me more examples about the uses of cloning humans? Scientist: Well, some woman can not have a baby and is (8)________ to have a child of her own. She doesn’t want to (9)_______ one. What can she do? Cloning gives him the possibility. Student: Is cloning human embryos illegal in all countries? general breakthrough desperate adopt

Scientist: No. Some scientists are already pushing ahead with research so as to (10)_______ a cloned human baby. Student: OK. Thank you. I will search on the Internet for more information. deliver

Post-reading Discussion 1.If human cloning was successful, who would be happy apart from the parents? 2.Do you think it would be easy for the cloned baby to accept his or her social identity as a cloned human being? 3.What would the cloned baby call the original cell owner, mother/ father or sister/brother? What would the person that had the original cell feel about the cloned baby?
