Book8 Unit2 Cloning using language The Return of the Dinosaurs?

Answer the following questions: 1.Have you ever seen the film Jurassic Park? Do people like this film? What animals do you see in the film? Are they real dinosaurs? Warming up ( 4ms )

2.Do you like dinosaurs? Can you see them in our real life? Why? Warming up ( 4ms )

3. Do you think it is possible to clone dinosaurs? If not, why? If yes, do you think that’s good for human beings? Why? Warming up ( 4ms )

Read the text, then tell the following sentences are true or false. ( Students can discuss in pairs. ) 1.Scientists are still experimenting with cloning mammals because they think it can make money. 2.The animals that have disappeared from the earth, like dinosaurs, can be brought back to life through cloning. 3. If we can clone any extinct animals, we should let them live in a zoo. F F F Reading -- I scanning ( 5ms )

Give some reasons why it is either impossible or unsuitable to clone extinct animals Reason 1: Reason 2: Reason 3: You need perfect DNT There is not enough diversity for cloned animals to overcome new diseases. It would be unfair to clone any extinct animals if they would have to live in a zoo.

Advantage of diversityDisadvantage of diversity Diversity in a group of cloned animals If there is a new illness some of these animals may die,but others will survive and passed on the ability to resist that disease to their children. They would all have the same arrangement of genes and so they might all die of the same disease.

Reading -- II Detail reading ( 6ms ) Read the text, then answer the following questions. ( Students can discuss in pairs. ) 1.Why should’t you clone an extinct animal unless there is enough diversity in the group? 2.Why is it wrong to clone an extinct animal if it would have to live in a zoo? 3.Why can’t you clone the DNA of animals that have been extinct longer than 10,000 years?

1.Why should’t you clone an extinct animal unless there is enough diversity in the group? There will not be enough genetic variation ( 遗传变异 )in the group to be able to resist new illnesses.

2. Why is it wrong to clone an extinct animal if it would have to live in a zoo? It is not a good idea to clone an animal that would have to live in a zoo because it is not a suitable habitat to develop and increase its numbers. The zoo is not a natural environment for a wild animal.

3. Why can’t you clone the DNA of animals that have been extinct longer than 10,000 years? The DNA of animals more than 10,000 years old is not suitable for cloning, for it can’t survive so long.

Reading -- III Argument ( 10ms ) 1. Read the passage again and have a argument according to the requirement of Ex.2 on Page 16. 2. Students work in groups, when discussing, the head of each group should write down the opinions of all the members. 3. Ask some volunteers to show their opinions.

D. had the characteristics of all three sheep. * Reading – I Skimming Choose the right answer according to the text.

2. It can be inferred from the passage that a cloned animal_____. A. usually lives as long as the original one B. usually lives longer than the original one C. usually lives shorter than the original one D. is usually as healthy as the original one *

Reading – III Intensive reading (7ms ) Read the letter again, then try to find the main idea of each paragraph. 1.Cloning is ______________________________ 2.Cloning has ____________ uses. 3.The _________ of Dolly. 4. The ________ of Dolly. 5. It is __________ to clone human beings. a way of making an exact copy of another animal and plant. problems two major effect forbidden

3. The cloning of Dolly the sheep succeeded because____. A.its easier to clone a sheep than other animals B.the scientists were determined and worked hard with patience C. the scientists were rewarded and got lots of money D. many other attempts to clone mammals failed *

4. Which of the following is not an advantage of cloning? A.Cloning can be used for medical purposes. B.Large quantities of food can be produced by cloning. C.Cloning can help keep animals from becoming extinct. D.Famous persons who have passed away can be cloned. *
