The Bible and small groups: Jesus and the disciples Jesus had a small group “Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve— designating them apostles—that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons…” Mark 3:13-15

The Bible and small groups: The Early Church “They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship (koinonia), to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” Acts 2:42-47

The Bible and community The Ekklesia (assembly or congregation) is never conceived of as institutional; but exclusively as a fellowship of persons, as the common life based in fellowship with Jesus Christ as a fellowship of the Spirit (koinonia pneumatos) and a fellowship of Christ (Koinonia Christou). To be in Christ through faith and to be in this fellowship are one and the same thing. Emil Brunner, Dogmatics, Vol. 3, p.21.

Small Group Bible Discussion Questions 1. What words or ideas are repeated or emphasized in this passage? 2. What does the passage say about God? About humankind? 3. What are the lessons of this passage about a life of faith? 4. How does this passage apply to my life of faith?
