2  America’s first National Park  Established in 1872  Located in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho  Home to a large variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves, bison and elk.  Located on a large volcanic field, that millions of years ago had some of the most volcanic eruptions.  The Earth’s largest concentration of geysers ( Old Faithful etc.) & some of the world’s most extraordinary hot springs.

3 People & Yellowstone  Around 11.000 years ago Yellowstone was use d as home or hunting ground by Native people  In 1872 it became the 1 st National Park of the United States  Today it is internationally recognized as one of the most magnificent parks (natural wonders & wildlife) The importance of Fire  Ecosystem adapted to wildfires  Many of its plants have adaptations that help them survive fires  For example, roots that live even if the top of the plant is burnt

4 Mammals ( 67 different species) Some of them :  Bison, grizzly bears, gray wolf, elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, mountain goat and mountain lion. Habitats  Alpine tundra: dry, rocky, treeless areas near the top of the mountains. There, exist: low growing plants & some mammals: mountain goats & pika  Mountain meadows: grassland of thousand of acres. Because of heavy winter snows, they often remain moist. Habitats: elk, pronghorns, deer  Sage-steppe Grasslands: treeless areas of grass, shrubs & wildflowers, with low moisture and seasonal extremes in temperature. Habitat: bison

5 Boundary conflicts  Yellowstone was basically established to preserve the geysers and the hot springs, not necessarily to protect the wide-ranging wildlife.  Today, for Yellowstone’s big animals –such as grizzy bear, elf, wolves- it’s not clear where the boundaries start and stop.  Many of these species require wide ranges or migration corridors to get to their breeding sites.  The result: wildlife migrates outside of the park boundaries into unprotected areas. The area around Yellowstone is a frequent site of conflict between wildlife and people
