Collections Support at UMKC Libraries Faculty Library Advisory Committee October 15, 2013

The Context 1. Library budget has been flat or decreased over time which has also meant reductions in the collections budget. 2. More budgetary pressures (technology, equipment and supplies, etc.). 3. Collections budget also covers services to access materials (interlibrary loan fees, MERLIN catalog, RooSearch, etc.). 4. Most of the collections budget goes to serials (journal and database subscriptions). Serial pricing inflates at a higher rate than CPI. 5. The library does have limited gift funding available for collections. 6. Demand for electronic resources and 24X7X365 access.

Serials Inflation Serials inflation increases result in annual cancellation projects or more of the collections budget devoted to serials. Projected serial inflation rate for 2014 is 6%.

Fiscal Year 2014 1.Collections budget = $2,168,628. 2.Amount allocated for serials = $2,106,291 (97%). 3.Remainder going to music scores and interlibrary loan fees. 4.$76,000 from library gift funds being allocated to cover requests from faculty.

Current Strategies 1.We have an e-preferred policy for journals. Shifting to an e-preferred policy for books. LIBQUAL survey demonstrated user preference for online access. 2.Shared purchasing of online collections (MERLIN, MOBIUS, Greater Western Library Alliance). a)MOBIUS e-book program: 140,000 titles for under $10,000 per year. (At $57 avg cost per print book, this would have purchased 173 print books.) 3.Rely on demand-driven selection: a)Demand-driven acquisitions program for e-books. b)Utilize resource sharing and interlibrary loan.
