DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Pressure and performance

DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Is this you?  I work best under pressure  I feel guilty when taking a lunch break or leaving on time  I regularly find myself with too little to do  I flit from one task to another and keep checking emails  I don’t ask for help if I can’t do/understand something  I tend not to offer help voluntarily  I think – and talk – about work at home  I worry that I won’t be able to complete my work  I promise things I don’t think I can deliver  I tend to blow things out of proportion 7

DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Say ‘no’! Saying ‘no’ can be difficult, sticking to it can be even harder...

DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER The way we do things 9 Pragmatists and Activists Keen to try things out and like to get involved in new experiences. Like practical concepts that can be applied to their work. Tend to get bored or impatient easily and prefer to jump in, get on with it and worry about the implications afterwards. Theorists and Reflectors Like to stand back, looking at the task from different angles. They think the problem through step by step and research, collecting data and information before coming to any conclusion. They are careful, perfectionists who can be rather detached and analytical. 12 DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Priority matrix 12 1: IMPORTANT/ URGENT DO NOW Emergencies, complaints, crises, staff issues, problem resolution 2: IMPORTANT/NOT URGENT PLAN TO DO Planning, preparation, networking, research, system development 3: NOT IMPORTANT/URGENT REJECT & EXPLAIN Trivial requests from others, apparent emergencies, ad hoc interruptions (could you justs) pointless activities 4: NOT IMPORTANT/NOT URGENT RESIST AND CEASE Chatting, gossip, emails, Facebook, reading irrelevant material, embellishment, over production From Businessballs.com

DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Multi-tasking 13 Focus on one thing at a time: Our mind works better when focused on one thing. Multitasking may seem a useful skill but we are more productive when completing one task at a time. Don’t allow or cause interruptions: Set up systems to minimise (causing) interruptions. Get organised!

DEVELOPING EXCELLENCE TOGETHER Three lists of 3 Each morning before you start work, make three lists. 1. Three things that you will get done today. 2. Three things that you will get done today if you have time. 3. Three things that will get done eventually. 14
