2 Introduction All ELI classes must face the challenge of collaborating with colleagues over great distances. With the wide acceptance of the internet as a communication resource new networking tools have emerged. Most of these tools are low-cost or free

3 ELI and Technology This presentation will outline… How the ELI Class of 2000 used the technology of eGroups.com as tool for communicating and accessing information The capabilities and benefits provided by the eGroups The role of the eGroups in creating an on-line network for ELI members

4 Anticipating Problems The ELI class had to first decide how they were going to deal with the traditional problems experienced by ELI classes.

5 Obstacles to Overcome Past ELI classes complained of a lack of communication between trainer and class members, lack of communication regarding project status, lack of involvement of some class members and problems in sharing research and documents.

11 eGroups Services and Benefits File Storage Upload documents relating to ELI project 20 megabytes of private storage space for saving files, photos, MP3's, and any other group documents. Calendar Schedule meetings, events, and automatic email reminders

12 eGroups and ELI Facilitated Project planning Conducted ELI meetings Collaborated and stored documents Gained New Internet skills Increased ELI Involvement Discussed Issues Related to Project Announced Events and Requests for Feedback Coordinated Research With eGroups, this ELI met each of its Challenges

13 On-Line ELI Network Of course, technology is no substitute for meeting face-to-face, but a combination of face-to-face meetings and using technology to continue communication in-between can be extremely effective in creating an On-Line Network.
