Mjr.Ing.Lenka PERNICOVÁ Modes of transport

Content Division Elements Mode of transport Transport

Transport or transportation General -the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to another. - is important because it enables trade between person, which is essential for the development of civilizations

Mode of transport Different ways to perform transportEach mode of transport: Has fundamentally diferent technological solution Some require a separate enviroment Has its own infrastructure, vehicles and operations Often has unique regulations Has its own advantage and disadvantage

Mode of transport - is a solution that makes use of a particular type of vehicle, infrastructure, and operation Human – powered – using human muscle-power Animal –powered – is the use of working animals for the movement of people and goods ?

Human-powered transport Non-vehicular - crawling, walking, running, sprinting, sviming and diving, climbing as in moutaineering and abseliing, skaiting, skiing……… Human – powered vehicles - watercraft - vehicles - aircraft

Mode of transport Suitable choice depends on:  cost  capability  route  speed Multimodal transport using more than one mode

Elements Infrastructure – is the fixed installations that allow a vehicle to operate Vehicles – is non-living device that is used to move people and goods Operation – private transport ( owner of vehicle), public transport ( private enterprise or governments)

Mode of transport Aviation Land transpor Rai l Road Water Other modes Pipelines Cable transport Space transport Division

Aiviation – Air transport  Quick transport of people and limited amounts of cargo over longer distances  The basic elements of the system: aircraft aircraft (airplane, helicopter, satellites) air route air route (airport, air traffic services, airspace)  Is characterized by relative high safety  Experience the fastest growth  Incur high costs & energy use  Greater dependence on weather  Causes air & noise pollution

Rail  Conveyance of passengers and goods by way of wheeled vehicles running on rail track  A train consist of : arailway carriage a railway carriage (one ormore connected vehicles) a locomotive a locomotive (steam, diesel or electric)  Transportation of heavy & bulk cargo  Suitability for medium & long-distance  High reliability of supply  Lower energy consumption than road transport  More environmentally friendly than road & air transport  Reduced room for manoeuvre

Road  The set of activities that ensure passengers and goods transportation by way of wheeled vehicles usually on roads or paved roads ar, bus, truck, motorcycle, trolley, bicycle, pedestrians  Users of road: car, bus, truck, motorcycle, trolley, bicycle, pedestrians  Lowest transit time (especially for short distances)  Dense network of road infrastructure  The main source of noise and air pollution in cities  Flexibility – vehicle may by sent at any time to meet the transport task

Water  Movement by means of a watercraft carrying people (passengers) or goods (cargo) abarge, a boat, a ship, a sailboat  A watercraft include (basic division): a barge, a boat, a ship, a sailboat  Highly effective method of transporting large quantities of non-perishable goods  Less costly than air transport for transcontinental shipping  Less speed and lower energy comsuption than road transport  More enviromentally friendly than road and air transport

Other modes  Pipeline transport – most commonly for gases and liquid  Cable transport – mode, vhere vehicles are pulled cables insteand of an internal power supply – commonly used in a steep climb – cable car, elevator, escalator, ski lift  Space transport – out of Eart“s atmosphere into outer space by means of a spacecraft putting satellites into orbit While large amounts of research have gone into technology, it is rarely used, except: putting satellites into orbit conducting scientific experiments conducting scientific experiments Probes have been sent to all the planets of the Solar System
