Intermodal Transportation Institute University of Denver 2 The Case Study: An Educational Tool  Case studies are used as a teaching tool to show the application of a theory or concept to real situations.  The “teaching case” is an empirical, field-based document that represents a slice of reality - a particular time and place in the life of a real organization.  Case studies foster learning within the organization or economy on many various issues.  The use of case studies as a teaching tool was originally pioneered by Harvard Business School.

Intermodal Transportation Institute University of Denver 3 Case Study: An Educational Tool  The case study is a teaching tool to provide a real world example used to stimulate discussion and the exchange of ideas about challenges and opportunities in intermodal transportation.  The effort to increase trade and commerce between APEC economies is based on the belief that open communication and dialogue, and a sharing of technology and techniques will benefit all economies. The case study helps to accomplish these goals.

Intermodal Transportation Institute University of Denver 4 Background  This project is both a new project, and also an extension of TPT 03/2000 T, successfully completed in Manila in March of 2002,  The workshop, entitled "The Implementation and Utilization of New Technologies in Intermodal Transportation in Asia- Pacific Trade" included a detailed study of the intermodal system of the Seattle Washington USA region.  Building upon the success of this project, the Intermodal Task Force would like to extend the work of TPT 03/2002 T, to include the development of additional case studies that could be used for similar purposes, namely, that of developing the skills and competencies of transportation professionals throughout the APEC region.

Intermodal Transportation Institute University of Denver 8 Criteria for Additional Case Studies After extensive discussions the following criteria were identified -Reflect a range of developed to undeveloped locations -Reflect the range of problems experienced by APEC economies -Reflect the challenges faced by APEC economies -Reflect a range of both land and sea transportation challenges -Represent best practices available -Reflect most up-to-date technologies -Reflect intermodal and nodal options -Reflect range of intelligent transportation system technologies -Location sponsors demonstrate sufficient support to gather data and material to present

Intermodal Transportation Institute University of Denver 10 The Current Case Study  APEC sponsored a study of congestion points in the APEC region  Using an area that is convenient and somewhat similar to the needs and challenges faced by other APEC economies  The Puget Sound area was identified as one of the key areas in need of further study  As such, a case study on the particular issues, concerns, and challenges of this area was prepared for use as a training tool for APEC economies

Intermodal Transportation Institute University of Denver 11 Case Study Extension  The Case Study is being extended through the addition of new material and information that is relevant to the continued development of the region.  Additional information enables more appropriate and in-depth exploration of the material in classroom settings.  The Puget Sound region has many similarities to other APEC pacific rim economies.

Intermodal Transportation Institute University of Denver 30 Part III Detail Part III (planned – not underway)  Develop four (4) additional case study materials for use in educational activities throughout the APEC region.  Develop written materials for each of the case studies describing the intermodal system in the designated region.  Identify additional background and source material relevant to the location for each of the case studies.  Develop at least one of the case studies that will deal extensively with security issues.  Prepare transcripts of interviews with key individuals who have expert knowledge about the region will be provided.  Prepare video taped interviews with key informants for each case study.  Develop discussion questions for each of the case studies.
