April 6, 2005IST 6th FP - Great opportunity for Cooperation & Collaboration 2 E-learning E-Learning is a term referring broadly to technology-based learning, seems to focus on Web-based delivery methods, but often used in broader context. E-learning is the use of online technologies in learning and teaching: E-mail Websites Multimedia – webcams, video, audio, animation information from the Internet Discussion groups Chat software Bulletin boards - Course Management Systems (CMS) - Enterprise Learning Management Systems (ELMS) - Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) Software tools: Authoring Tools Real-time Virtual Classrooms Learning Management Systems (LMS): Virtual instructors Online Tests Newsgroups Teleconferencing & videoconferencing Shared whiteboard s Web forums Computer files

April 6, 2005IST 6th FP - Great opportunity for Cooperation & Collaboration 3 Advantages of e-learning Lower costs Learn when you need it (Just-In-Time) Effective use of time Learning options are not constrained by learners geographic location Effective for certain types of learners (shy, reflective, language challenged, those that need more time) Instruction can be more customized and flexible (especially CBT) Side benefits of learning new technologies and technical skills Learning can be fit into learners busy schedule Learner-focused Etc.

April 6, 2005IST 6th FP - Great opportunity for Cooperation & Collaboration 4 Critical analysis Study of 40 Global companies - unless forced, the majority of workers ( 68% ) would not sign up for voluntary online courses (by Forrester Group). Even when online courses were compulsory, over 30% refused to sign up. Those who do sign up for a course, between 50% and 80% never finish the course. Crisis in e-learning

April 6, 2005IST 6th FP - Great opportunity for Cooperation & Collaboration 5 Why? Focus on new technology, not on instructional design Speed to market Boredom Lack of understanding of learning and teaching Lack of understanding of the unique teaching advantages of electronic media...

April 6, 2005IST 6th FP - Great opportunity for Cooperation & Collaboration 8 Conclusions ITS is not a new term, but the problem is still actual. In addition to the continuing work on ITS, one important research issue is to use methodologies of AI as a theoretical base of the ITS, as well as learning theory, instructional design, instructional strategies, pedagogy, and teaching methods. This connection can open new perspectives in e-learning research area. Seeing no really usable practical results, ITS is still perceived by many as a technology of the future, but the rapid growth of learning software and artificial intelligence is making it a viable option.
