3. Cuban Missile Crisis The success of the US after the Cuban Missile Crisis gave Pres. Kennedy and the US a strong sense of confidence. The US felt that it had more power that the Soviet Union which lead to the US getting involved in more international conflicts. Next up would be the country of Vietnam that was trying to resist a recent uprising of Communism.

4. Vietnam Situation Vietnam had recently come under a Communist Revolution in the North. The South remained Democratic so the country split in two. The leader of the Communist in the North was Ho Chi Mihn. The leader, and President of the South Vietnamese was a Catholic named Ngô Đình Diệm. What religion would you guess most Vietnamese citizens were? Would having a Catholic leader pose a problem?

5. US Involvement/Involvement With the majority of the citizens of Vietnam were Buddhist, they rejected Diem as their leader. In response, Diem imprisoned thousands of Vietnamese that spoke out against him. Diem was seen as a bad guy to many. Kennedy refused to send aid to the South Vietnamese to fight against the North Vietnamese. Why is it surprising that the US did not support Diem?

6. Assassinations of the Leaders With the help of the US and other countries, a coup was staged to overthrow the South Vietnamese Gov. In the coup, Diem was killed. The CIA and President Kennedy were in favor of the coup, but many government officials did not approve of the assanation of Diem. With the South Vietnamese fighting the North, and Diem dead, what you predict will happen to South Vietnam without US aid?

7. Assassinations of the Leaders With Kennedy refusing to send aid to South Vietnam, many government officials started to question Kennedy’s leadership. Support for LBJ (Lyndon B. Johnson, the Vice President) started to grow as he opposed Kennedy’s decision to not help the Vietnamese. Two months later, Kennedy was killed in Dallas, Texas while in his car. Coincidence or not…you decide…

8. Assassinations of the Leaders On Nov. 23, 1963, Pres. Kennedy was riding in his car in Dallas, TX when he was shot and killed. Even with confusion over where the shots came from, it was deduced that a former FBI employee, Lee Harvey Oswald was the assassin and he acted alone. Two days later, Oswald was shot and killed by Jack Ruby while being transferred to another police station. Ruby was believed to have ties to the mafia.

9. The New President Moments after Kennedy was shot, LBJ was sworn into the Presidency. His first order as President was to send American troops and aid to South Vietnam.

10. Vietnam Situation Complete the book notes. You may use the notes from yesterday to answer some of the questions.
