have been developed to warn users of the hazards associated with different products. HAZARDOUS SAFETY SYMBOLS Safety symbols: 1) HHPS 2) WHMIS Found on household products – mostly cleaners. “Hazardous Household Product Symbol” “Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System” Found on products used at the workplace – mostly cleaners. 2 TYPES of Safety Symbols

There are 3 levels of hazards, each more harmful than the previous. There are 12 HHPS representing different types and levels of hazard. FOUR TYPES: THREE LEVELS: poisonousexplosivecorrosiveflammable cautionwarningdanger yellow 4 sides red colour # of sides more harmful There are 4 different types of hazards. 3 sides orange 8 sides HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT SYMBOLS

Combining the TYPE and LEVEL of hazard creates a HHPS. caution poison warning poison danger poison caution flammable warning corrosive danger explosive HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT SYMBOLS

Label each safety symbol by LEVEL and TYPE of hazard. danger poisonous caution corrosive caution flammable caution explosive danger explosive warning flammable warning poisonous warning explosive warning corrosive danger corrosive danger flammable caution poisonous HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD PRODUCT SYMBOLS

WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INFORMATION SYSTEMS SYMBOLS There are 8 WHMIS symbols. Each WHMIS symbol has a CIRCLE for its border. flammable dangerously reactive poisonous: other effects oxidizing agent biohazardous and infectious corrosive compressed gas poisonous: immediate & toxic effects

s s Proper Equipment Use Injuries Chemical Use Clean Up LAB SAFETY AND CONDUCT LAB CONDUCT AND SAFETY Personal Behaviour and Attire

PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR AND ATTIRE No open-toed shoes allowed in the lab. No contacts – chemicals can go underneath and stick to your eye. Protects from unexpected splatters and shatters. Goggles worn at all times. Ouch!

Loose clothes need to be secured and out of the way. PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR AND ATTIRE No fooling around during the lab! Long hair needs to be tied back.

PERSONAL BEHAVIOUR AND ATTIRE Do not put your hands in your eyes or mouth during the lab. No eating or drinking in the lab. YUCK!

Do not place equipment at the edge of the lab bench. Move bags and books to the wall. Keep your work area tidy. PROPER EQUIPMENT USE Move all chairs to the back of the room away from the benches before the lab starts. Students must stand during a lab.

Broken glass must be reported to the teacher and placed in the proper container. Broken equipment must be reported to the teacher. Unplug the hotplate when not in use to prevent burns and to let it cool down before storing. PROPER EQUIPMENT USE Don’t just put it back!

Inform your teacher of any chemical spills before cleaning. Know the hazards in the lab before starting your experiment. CHEMICAL USE Do not pour any chemicals down the sink.

Smell a chemical using the “HAND WAVING” method. Do not taste any of the chemicals. CHEMICAL USE Take only the amount of chemicals that you need. Share – don’t be greedy! Greedy Smurf

Be careful not to cross-contaminate your chemicals. When mixing chemicals, always add the water first. CHEMICAL USE This prevents the chemical from splashing. In some cases the large volume of water absorbs heat that may be generated when the two substances combine.

If something enters your eye, have a partner direct you to the eye wash station. Position face above the station with eyes open for 10 minutes. Immediately inform your teacher and place injury under running water for 5-10 minutes. Immediately inform your teacher, clean the cut and put a bandage on it. INJURIES

All equipment needs to be properly washed, rinsed and put in the drying rack/area. CLEANUP Put goggles back NEATLY into the storage area. Put back all equipment where you got it, if you do not have to wash it.

Spray then wipe down lab bench with paper towel. Do not put paper towel in the recycling; it goes in the GARBAGE. CLEANUP Wash your hands at the end of the lab.
