3 HEALTH? World Health Organisation’s (WHO) definition of health: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (1946)

5 Let's get PHYSICAL! WHAT DO WE MEAN BY THE TERM “PHYSICAL”…

6 A Day in the Life of Wesley: 7am to 9am: Breakfast, 2km to 3km walk/run and work. 9am to 1pm: Desk work UCC with intermittent standing periods and lunch 2pm to 5pm: Desk work UCC with intermittent standing periods, 10 minute walk and snack 5pm onwards: My activity time (walk, run, gym, game etc…)

7 Do you know? 13.5 million people have coronary heart disease. 1.5 million people suffer from a heart attack in a given year. 250,000 people suffer from hip fractures each year. Over 60 million people (a third of the population) are overweight. 50 million people have high blood pressure. (WHO, 2003)

8 How Much Physical Activity Do Irish Children Need? Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of physical activity daily. – Aerobic Activities: Most of the 60 or more minutes per day should be either moderate- or vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. Include vigorous-intensity physical activity at least 3 days per week. – Muscle-strengthening Activities: Include muscle- strengthening physical activity on at least 3 days of the week, as part of the 60 or more minutes. – Bone-strengthening Activities: Include bone- strengthening physical activity on at least 3 days of the week, as part of the 60 or more minutes. – Activities should be age-related, enjoyable, and varied (Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee, 2008; Department of Health and Children, 2009)

10 How Much Physical Activity Do Irish Adults Need? In groups of two to three, please discuss what you believe the Irish physical activity guidelines for adults are? If possible, write these viewpoints down.

11 Moderate ActivityVigorous Activity Increased breathing and heart rate, but still able to carry on a conversation. Warm or sweating slightly, comfortable. Breathing heavily, cannot keep a conversation going, faster heart rate and sweating, concentrating hard. Muscle ActivitiesBalance Activities Digging, lifting and carrying while gardening Carrying groceries Circuit training, step aerobics Exercises using bands, weight machines etc… Tai chi and yoga exercises Backward and sideways walking, and walking on heels and toes Standing from a sitting position Standing on one foot

13 Benefits of physical activity – reduces the risk of:…. – Diabetes – Heart disease – High blood cholesterol – Sleep apnea and breathing problems – Cancer – Depression – Hypertension (high blood pressure)

14 Physical Activity and Immune Function Physical activity can help the immune system fight illness Moderate to vigorous physical activity can aid the body in fighting disease (Corbin et al., 2006) Sedentary people have more risk High performance training also decreases immune system function

16 Physical Activity and Aging Physical activity can improve fitness and improve functioning among older adults 30% of adults >70 years old have difficulty in daily living (Corbin et al., 2006) Why? Lack of fitness and inactivity Loss of muscle fitness, loss of balance, greater risk of falling and less ability to function independently
