BELL RINGER Elwood was excited to see that the Xbox-360 was marked 1/5 off and after he did the math he realized that he had finally saved enough money for the brain-killing game system. Then, his Aunt Mildred reminded him that he would have to pay 8% in sales taxes added to the newer, lower priced system. How much total money will Elwood need if the original price of the system before any discount was $350.

Random Notes on Fractions (This means you write this down in your spiral)

Random Notes on Fractions (This means you write this down in your spiral) You can draw a couple of pizzas and see that 1/8 th of a pizza is smaller than 1/2.

Random Notes on Fractions (This means you write this down in your spiral) Another method you can use to compare the value of two fractions with different denominators is what Mr. Westerdale (Duncanville Junior High – 1971) called the “bow tie” method.

Random Notes on Fractions (This means you write this down in your spiral) Try multiplying the denominator on the right to the numerator on the left, and writing this product above that left numerator.

Random Notes on Fractions (This means you write this down in your spiral) Now, multiply the denominator of the fraction on the left by the numerator of the fraction on the right and put that product over the fraction on the right. The question now is: Which is bigger, 18 or 25?

Random Notes on Fractions (This means you write this down in your spiral) OK, there are two issues on the bow-tie method that I find interesting. 1.Can you tell me how it works? (hint: it’s already doing something we’ve been doing in class.) 2.Do you see any problems making this the only way to determine the relative value of fractions?

Blitzkrieg Put your name date and period on a paper and get ready to work fast. Four fraction related problems will appear on the screen. You will work them as quickly and accurately as you can (note: “quickly” came first). When three people have indicated they’ve finished by showing me the sign for “d” (done), then you will hear a bell and you are to immediately pass the paper to the person to your left (those on the left will have to give it to the person on the right side of the row behind them. There will be one person on the back row who will have to get up and bring their paper to the person sitting on the right side of the front row. This is your right and your left…not mine.

Blitzkrieg First Set: Reduce Fraction to simplest form.

Blitzkrieg Second Set: Solve addition problems by finding common denominator.

Random Notes on Fractions (Again, this means you write this down in your spiral)

Random Notes on Fractions (Again, this means you write this down in your spiral) A fast way to convert mixed numbers is to multiply the denominator of the fraction. In this case 3, by the integer, in this case 4.

Random Notes on Fractions (Again, this means you write this down in your spiral) Then add this product to the numerator of the fraction, in this case 2.

Random Notes on Fractions (Again, this means you write this down in your spiral) A fast way to convert mixed numbers is to multiply the denominator of the fraction. In this case 3, by the integer, in this case 4. Now back to Blitzkrieg.

Blitzkrieg Third Set: Convert these mixed numbers to regular fractions.

Blitzkrieg Fourth Set: Convert these fractions into mixed numbers.
