Our Solar System Kurt Hess Science Grade: 2 February 13, 2012

Our Solar System Our Solar system consists of more stars than any one person on Earth can count. *Compare – Cells in the adult Human Body Use this virtual sky to discover and visualize the number of stars we can see from an ordinary night from our location on earth.virtual sky *by clicking on the sky and scrolling your mouse over the object, it will tell you which solar object it is.

Solar System – The Sun The Sun is the largest object in our Solar System. The earth and every object in our Solar System revolves around the Sun. Open this sky map to see how the Sun is the central object and all of the planets, stars, moons, and others revolve around it.sky map *Explore each object and learn interesting facts by clicking on the picture. The Sun is a star and on the surface is measured to be 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. *Compare: Hot Summer day (90degrees), Oven (400degrees)

Solar System – The Sun The Sun is a star and on the surface is measured to be 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. *Compare: Hot Summer day (90degrees), Oven (400degrees)

Solar System – Earth Because we revolve around the Sun, the Sun, our moon, and stars appear to move slowly across the sky. As the Earth rotates around the Sun, it also spins itself. * Activity: Stand up, Look toward the sky, and slowly rotate and notice how the ceiling appears to be moving. We call this, spinning on its “axis”. Watch this video, and observe how day and night are created by the Earth rotating on its axis.video * In the video, visualize the Sun being on the right.

Solar System – Are We Moving? Although we feel like we are sitting still, we are constantly in motion. The earth is constantly spinning and rotating. * Rotation activity in the Gymnasium Because we are constantly moving, this allows us to see the Sun and moon each day. (as they appear to move slowly across the sky) This also is the reason why the moon appears to change shape.

Solar System- The Moon The earth only has one moon. Our moon is rotating around us, as we rotate around the Sun. At the same time! This causes the moon to go through something called “phases”. The moon is like our shadow and it appears in different shapes and forms.

Solar System- The Moon The phases of the moon allow us to see what time of the year it is. Use this site to learn more about the Phases of the Moon.Phases of the Moon. * Notice that “Waxing” means growing, and “Waning” means getting smaller.

Moon Phase Challenge Now that you’ve learned about the Moon Phases, see if you can pass the Moon Phase Challenge !Moon Phase Challenge
