Most popular tourist destinations

Reasons for growth of tourism Tourism has grown massively as an industry over the past century for a variety of reasons: Advances in technology means there’s more ways to travel and it is getting cheaper (budget airlines) People have more paid holidays People have more available income now. The availability and type of holiday has increased The media – TV and the internet means people are more aware of different places to visit

France Make sure you can locate: Paris Alps English Channel Atlantic Ocean Mediterranean Sea

Why is France so popular? France has a wide variety of attractions which makes it popular with a wide range of tourists. It is also quite central in Europe which makes it easy to get to, especially from the UK.

Tourism AdvantagesProblems Foreign currency spent by tourists can be invested in improving local education, health and other services. Profits go to foreign companies, such as tour operators and hotel chains, rather than to the local community. Jobs for local people are created and people can learn new skills in tourism services. Foreign companies may bring foreign workers to do the skilled jobs; so local people only do low skilled, poorly paid work. Tourists see beautiful landscapes, wildlife and plants. They can also be educated about the dangers to fragile ecosystems in the modern world. Clashes can occur between locals and tourists Local infrastructure is improved as water and sanitation facilities, roads, buses, taxis and airports are provided for tourists. Air travel causes a massive amount of air pollution Visitors get an insight into local customs and traditions. Pollution and disruption to wildlife habitats could occur if tourism isn't sustainable.

National Parks There are 15 National Parks in the UK. Their aim is to provide recreation for people and for conservation of the environment. There are lots of different groups of people who are interested in what goes on in National Parks e.g. local residents, visitors, businesses, environmentalists. Conflicts (problems) can often occur between groups of people when new developments are suggested. Some people want to put more opportunities for recreation into the parks but some people want to protect the environment in the parks.
