7 142 Teaching Zack to Think: Developing Critical Thinking Skills Too many students are not sure how to separate fact from fiction on the Internet. The Internet can provide any version of the truth to support almost any belief. We can teach students how to read the “grammar” of the Internet and to apply strategies to validate information on a website. Workshop provides step-by-step teaching tips that help students and teachers think critically about Internet information.

8 142 What is Critical Thinking? How do you teach “ Crtitical Thinking Skills” in your classroom. >>>>>> Nudge your neighbor

9 142 Teaching Zack to Think: Developing Critical Thinking Skills Separate fact from fiction on the Internet. To validate information on a website. Help students and teachers think critically about Internet information.

10 142 What is Critical Thinking? In 1605, Sir Francis Bacon, the father of scientific thinking, outlined these habits of mind (paraphrased):

11 142 "Nimble and versatile" enough to see relationships among things, in addition to subtle distinctions between them. Inquisitive. Patient enough to doubt and ask questions. Fond of reflecting. Slow to assert and ready to consider multiple points of view. Careful to support their points of view and to formulate an argument with reasons and evidence. Alert to all deception.

83 142 Check the External Links Check the External Links Examining a web site's external links is an important step in validating Internet information. In validating, ask three questions:

84 142 1. Who is linked to the web site? Look to see what other groups or individuals have linked to the site. Are they universities, schools or commercial sites? Read the URLs and titles of external links carefully. Look to see if there is a pattern in the types of sites linked. 2. What is the purpose of the link? Why have groups or individuals chosen to link to this site? Web authors choose to link to other sites for specific purposes. Speculate on what those purposes might be. 3. What do other sites say about the information on the site? Gain perspective about a web site by reading what another site tells you about it. Cross-reference information and look for hidden bias.
