3 Problem Solving Strategy “U-P-S”
Understand: Read the problem and think about the question. Each word is important. Missing a word or reading it incorrectly could cause you to get the wrong answer. Plan: Think about how you can solve the problem. Look for key words and numbers. What do you need to do first? What do you need to do next? Solve: Follow your plan, working logically and carefully. Make sure you solved all steps needed to answer the problem. Be sure you answered the question asked. Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 2

6 Let’s Compare Numbers We can compare numbers using >, < and = signs.  Line up the numbers vertically 30 32 Start at the left to compare digits in the greatest place first. Highlight the digits in the first vertical column where the digits are different. Now compare these highlighted digits to compare the value. 25 < > 32 Chapter 4 Lesson 1 Chapter 17 Lesson 1 & 2 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 2

7 Let’s Compare Numbers ! Example # 1 Example # 2
  3 tens 9 ones Simplify the expression. Compare whole numbers using the symbols >, <, and =. 35 = 35 47 > 39 Chapter 6 Lesson 4 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 2

1, 3, 5, 7, 9 are odd numbers Chapter 4 Lesson 3 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 2

9 Let’s Find Even & Odd Numbers !
 Make groups of two to decide if a number is even or odd. If there is none left over, the number is even xx xx xx  If there is one left over, the number is odd. 7 xx xx xx x Chapter 4 Lesson 3 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 2

10 Let’s Find Even & Odd Numbers !
The one’s digit determines if the number is even or odd. Students will circle the one’s place. Example: 47 26 odd even xx xx xx x xx xx xx Chapter 4 Lesson 3 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 2

Let’s Practice 2-Digit Addition 3 1 Ask these questions: “Is the sum greater than 9?” “Is the sum a two digit number?” “Can the sum be split into tens and ones?” Begin adding in the ones column. 9 If NO, then write the sum and bring down the tens. Ch 5 L 6 Ch 6 L 1 Copyright ©, Long Beach Unified School District. All rights reserved. - Grade 2

14 If the answer to the questions is YES then REGROUP.
