5 p-t graphsv-t graphs If you calculate the slope (ΔX/Δt) you get the average velocity. If the slope is constant, the velocity is constant. For an increasing or decreasing slope, you can calculate the slope of the line tangent to the curve to get the instantaneous velocity. If you calculate the slope (Δv/Δt) you get the average acceleration. If the slope is constant, the acceleration is constant. For an increasing or decreasing slope, you can calculate the slope of the line tangent to the curve to get the instantaneous acceleration. If you calculate the area under the line (Δv x Δt) you get the displacement (ΔX)

8 Graph trials A-D together: Trial A: Student walks at a constant velocity from the 0 yard to the 50 yard line. Trial B: Student walks at a constant velocity but faster than trial one from the 0 yard to the 50 yard line. Trial C: Student jogs at a constant velocity from the 0 yard to the 50 yard line. Trial D: Student starts at 50 yard line and walks at a constant velocity toward the 0 yard line.

9 Graph trials E-F together: Trial E: Student starts out walking for 20 yards, then quickens the pace to a jog for 20 yards, and then to a full out run for 20 yards. Trial F: Student runs for 20 yards, then slows to a jog for 20 yards, and then walks for 20 yards.

10 Table for each trial should have position and time recorded for EVERY 10 YARDS. For trials A-D (Time should be on the X-axis!!!): Graph trials A-D on a position-time graph. Calculate the slope for trials A thru D from the p-t graph. Graph velocity vs time for trials A-D on a velocity-time graph. Again, time should be on the X-axis. Calculate the slope for trials A-D from the v-t graph. Graph acceleration vs time for trials A thru D on an acceleration-time graph.

11 For trials E-F(Time should be on the X-axis!!!): Graph trials E-F on a position-time graph. Calculate the slope of each line segment to get a picture of what the velocities were for each trial. Graph the velocities on a velocity-time graph If the velocities were to increase at a constant rate, what would the acceleration-time graph look like?
