1 Velocity Time Graph

2 How to Read a Velocity Time Graph
Three types of slope: Positive slope: Velocity is increasing. The object speeds up in the positive direction

3 How to Read a Velocity Time Graph
Three types of slope: Zero slope: The velocity of the object does not change with time (does not speed up or slow down)

4 How to Read a Velocity Time Graph
Three types of slope: Negative slope above the x axis: The object is slowing down

5 How to Read a Velocity Time Graph
Three types of slope: Negative slope below the x axis: The object is speeding up in the negative direction

6 Velocity time graph Using the same graph but with velocity instead of Position

7 - (Just like the position time graph) Look at the time intervals: What are the time intervals where there is a change in the slope AND when it crosses the x axis (velocity = 0)

8 - (Just like the position time graph) Look at the time intervals: What are the time intervals where there is a change in the slope AND when it crosses the x axis (velocity = 0) 0s – 10s 10s – 15s 15s – 30s 30s – 40s 40s – 55s

9 - 2) Interpret what is happening at each time interval Time interval 0s – 10s : Accelerates from 0m/s to 60m/s 10s – 15s : 15s – 30s 30s – 40s 40s – 55s

10 - 2) Interpret what is happening at each time interval Time interval 0s – 10s : Accelerates from 0m/s to 60m/s 10s – 15s : Maintains a velocity of 60m/s 15s – 30s 30s – 40s 40s – 55s

11 - 2) Interpret what is happening at each time interval 0s – 10s : Accelerates from 0m/s to 60m/s 10s – 15s : Maintains a velocity of 60m/s 15s – 30s : slows down from 60m/s to a stop (0m/s) 30s – 40s : 40s – 55 :

12 - 2) Interpret what is happening at each time interval 0s – 10s : Accelerates from 0m/s to 60m/s 10s – 15s : Maintains a velocity of 60m/s 15s – 30s : slows down from 60m/s to a stop (0m/s) 30s – 40s : Speeds up from 0 to 40m/s in the negative direction 40s – 55 :

13 - 2) Interpret what is happening at each time interval 0s – 10s : Accelerates from 0m/s to 60m/s 10s – 15s : Maintains a velocity of 60m/s 15s – 30s : slows down from 60m/s to a stop (0m/s) 30s – 40s : Speeds up from 0 to 40m/s in the negative direction 40s – 55 : Slows down From -40m/s to 0m/s

15 Calculating Acceleration on a Position time graph
A = ΔV = Vf - Vi = 60m/s - 0m/s = 60m/s = 6m/s2 Δt tf - ti 10s – 0s 10s

16 Calculating Acceleration on a Position time graph
A = ΔV = Vf - Vi = 60m/s - 60m/s = 0m/s = 0m/s2 Δt tf - ti 15s – 10s 5s

17 Calculating Acceleration on a Position time graph
A = ΔV = Vf - Vi = -40m/s - 0m/s = -40m/s = -4m/s2 Δt tf - ti 40s – 30s 10s

18 Calculating Acceleration on a Position time graph
A = ΔV =Vf - Vi = 0m/s –(-40m/s) = 40m/s = 2.6m/s2 Δt tf - ti 55s – 40s 15s
