Book Reviews By Dillon Middle School Students 2006-2007

These book reviews were written by students at Dillon Middle School to help other students in choosing books to read. We hope you find them helpful.

Night by Elie Wiesel This book is about the Holocaust and what Elie went through. The main characters are Elie, Elie’s father, mother, and sisters. Mostly the book is about Elie and his father, because his mother and sisters got separated by switching camps. Elie and his father hit a lot of bumps in the road when they should choose to go ahead and kill themselves or wait in time for the S.S. guards to kill them. In the book Elie and his father get separated many times, but at the end they meet each other once again. They are walking in the snow to reach another camp, when people are falling dead to the ground or the S.S. is killing them. Luckily they hide in a shed until the Americans come to save them! That is a little bit of what happens at the end of the book. Reviewed by: Tori Turner

I have enjoyed reading this book because I just like to learn on what happened at the Holocaust, even though it is very sad what happened to the Jews. I recommend this book to anybody who likes to learn about the Holocaust or is just looking for a book, because once they read it they will love it! This is the best book I have ever read before. Normally, I can’t get into books, but this one was really good and I just read the whole thing through! I love this book. It is the best EVER!

Clover by Dori Sanders Clover is a very nice girl, and she is ready to go to her father’s funeral and everyone in the house is getting ready, and the house is very quiet and no one is making a sound. Clover was very mad that her father died in a car accident. The main characters are Clover, Sara Kate, and Gaten. Clover is the daughter, Sara Kate is her step-mother, and Gaten is her PaPa. Clover is a very good girl who has a very close relationship with her father. Clover is a girl who is being raised by her father, Gaten, and her step-mother, Sara Kate. Gaten and Sara Kate get married and a few hours after they get married Gaten dies in a bad car accident. Clover is being raised by her step-mother, but she is very made that her father dies. Reviewed by: Kadejah B.

Clover was very confused and she didn’t really know what she was going to do, because her father dies a few hours after Gaten and Sara Kate got married, and I know how she felt to have a father die even though my father is not dead. My opinions about the story are that Clover will soon get over the death of her father, and she will like Sara Kate as she is, and she will love her just like she did her father. I recommend you to read this book because it is a very good book to read, and you will laugh your heart out then you may cry later.

Tulsa Burning by Anna Myers The title of my book that I’m going to tell you about is Tulsa Burning. The author is Anna Myers. The main characters are Noble (Nobe) Chase, Sheriff Leonard, Lester, Isaac, Isaac’s mother, and Nobe’s mother. Nobe is a teenage that seems to have a little bit of a hidden identity, but he is a caring and generous person. Sheriff Leonard is the meanest person in the book. Nobe and his mother have to live with him now because Nobe’s father died. Lester is Isaac’s father, he is mean, but he is nice at some point in the book. Isaac is older than Nobe, but he’s like Nobe’s best friend and he cares about people’s feelings. Nobe used to deliver milk to Isaac’s mother. She was a very nice person and she loved Nobe like her own son. Nobe’s mother is blind to see that Sheriff Leonard is using her, but she’s very nice to Nobe. Reviewed by: Crystal W.

Nobe lost a lot of things when his dad died, not to mention that Sheriff Leonard shot his dog! Violence starts to begin in Tulsa and that’s when Nobe has to decide what kind of person he wants to be. Personally, I think this book is FANTASTIC! I think that everyone that loves to read will definitely enjoy this book and you will not want to put it down!!!

Clover by Dori Sanders Clover is a book with many good ideas and good writing skills. Clover is a 10-year-old little girl with a big personality. She is very nice and gets along with everyone except her stepmother. Sara Kate is a grown woman. She is the type that tries to fit in with everybody. Clover is about a 10-year-old girl who’s father dies in a car accident with his new wife. Clover now has to live with her stepmother that she has only known for a couple of hours. Clover to me is a book with great writing skills that make it sound good. My recommendation for Clover would be to people who like to read books with great excitement and fun filled events. Reviewed by: Christalle P.

Don’t Go to Sleep! by R.L. Stine This book is about a geeky 12 year old named Matthew, also known as Matt, and he hates his tiny room so his mom lets him sleep in the guest room and there is a monster in there. Matt is a selfish, geekish boy, Pam is Matt’s sister, and Greg is Matt’s brother. I didn’t really enjoy the book because it didn’t have enough suspense. I think in the book they should have put you in more suspense. Reviewed by: Staci P.

Bridge to Terabithia by Katharine Paterson Wow, did you read that book Bridge to Terabithia? That book is banging! The book is mainly about these two kids called Leslie Burke and Jess Aarons. This story is about friendship, family, and power of imagination. Jess Aarons is an outsider at school and even in his own family. Jess has trained all summer to become the fastest kid in his middle school class, but his goal is unexpectedly thwarted by the new girl in school, Leslie Burke who competes in the “boy only” race and wins. Despite their awkward introduction, the two outsiders quickly become best friends. Leslie loves to tell stories of fantasy and magic. Jess loves to draw, but until he met Leslie it was something he kept to himself. Leslie opens a new world of imagination for Jess. Reviewed by: Jaylyn L.

Together, they create the secret kingdom of Terabithia, a magical place only accessible by swinging on an old rope over a stream in the woods near their homes. There, the friends rule in the kingdom, fight the Dark Master and his creatures, and plot against the school bullies. Jess also buys a puppy for Leslie for Christmas. She calls it Prince of Terabithia. Thanks to his friendship with Leslie, Jess is changed for good. Brimming with fantastical creatures, palaces, and beautiful forests, the world of Terabithia is brought to life. I hope you read this passage and it changes your mind about not reading this book.
