2 SMART Goals S – Specific M – Measurable A – Achievable R – Relevant T – Time-bound

3 Is this Goal SMART? I will get good grades. Specific? No Measurable? Not clear how Achievable?Who knows? Relevant?Maybe Time-bound?No

4 Is this Goal SMART? To help me get into college, I will earn an “A” in my Math class in first semester of 6 th grade. Specific?Yes (earn an “A” in Math) Measurable?Yes (can check my progress report) Achievable?Yes (if I study hard & do homework) Relevant?Yes (need good grades for college) Time-bound?Yes (first semester of 6 th grade)

5 Let’s Practice What are some goals you have? Improve my reading

6 Improve my reading… To improve my reading, I will read 2 chapter books at my grade level or higher by January 1, 2006 SpecificYes (2 chapter books at my grade level or higher) MeasurableYes (I can count the books I’ve read) AchievableYes (I have two weeks of winter vacation) RelevantYes (Reading longer, more challenging books helps me improve my reading Time-boundYes (By January 1, 2006)

7 From Goal to Action! 1. Brainstorm activities or strategies that can help you achieve your goal 2. Then, evaluate: Which are the most doable? Which would have the biggest impact? Which would be fun? Remember: The “best” activity or strategy means nothing if you’re not motivated to complete it.

8 Getting Started… What’s the very next thing you could do to start on this goal? Write it down! Why, you ask? Because you’re much more likely to do something that you’ve written down. Really!
