STEM U-Scholar Initiative Informal Lunch Opening Remarks Why now and not then? LSU is turning into a tuition-supported institution!  student recruitment & retention  development of true partnerships with K12 LSU can contribute valuable programs to your district:  2013-14: CCSS & PARCC math support thru LSU’s Math College Readiness and DE Program  2014-15: every partner district becomes an LSU STEM U-Scholar Campus

Math College Readiness and Dual Enrollment Program

Math Dual Enrollment Courses  Math 1021 College Algebra--- Advanced Math (first half of year)  Math 1022 Trigonometry --- Advanced Math (second half)  Math 1029 Contemporary Math ---Discrete Math (1 semester)  Math 1431 Business Calculus --- math elective (1 semester)

Math Dual Enrollment Schools  LSU Lab School  Tara  McKinley  Belaire  Brusly  Central  Episcopal  Dunham  Parkview Baptist  St. Joseph’s Academy  Archbishop Chapelle  Northlake Christian

Math Dual Enrollment Students

Math Dual Enrollment Program  Students have same Homework, Quizzes, Tests, and Final Exam as LSU students using MyMathLab (MML)  High school teachers present 1/3 of the face-to-face classroom time; students work 2/3 of the face-to-face time in a computer lab environment with teacher support  District pays $300 per student per course and buys each student a one-year MML subscription ($50)

Math College Readiness Program  Teachers become “certified” in the College Readiness Program by successfully completing the summer workshop training requirements  Districts involved in LSU dual enrollment program can send other district math teachers to summer workshop  Content available for Alg I, Geometry, Alg II, Advanced Math, Business Calculus, AP Calculus, and 6 through 8 th grade math  All courses aligned with the LCC and the CCSS

The Plan  Professional development for 8-days during the summer in LSU Math Lab; DE teachers attend two additional days of workshops  LSU math faculty and high school mentor teachers facilitate workshop (LSU Lab School, Tara, Sherwood)  Workshop content 1. Technology training in MyMathLab 2.Pedagogy of redesigned course delivery 3.Content mastery of math homework for teachers Math College Readiness Program Summer Workshop
