2 What Is a Copyright? It is the exclusive right to copy a work covered by a copyright which belongs to owner of the copyright

4 What Does “Copying” Mean? Reproducing the work Preparing derivative works Distributing the work Performing the work Displaying the work Using the work

5 What Is “Fair Use”? The use of a portion of copyrighted material in a way that does not infringe the owner's rights. The use of a portion of material for educational purposes, literary criticism or news reporting is often considered a fair use.

6 SFA Fair Use Guidelines A single copy of one or more chapters from a book One or more articles from a periodical title One or more short stories, essays, short poems, charts, graphs, diagrams, drawings, cartoons, or pictures Amount of copying should not exceed 10% of the entire volume For use in classroom or educational activities

9 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Limits SFA’s liability as an internet service provider for certain copyright infringe- ments created on-line Registered agent for on-line copyright infringement com- plaints is the General Counsel

10 DMCA Procedure Upon receipt of proper complaints, SFA will block access to or take down allegedly infringing materials SFA will notify the alleged infringer Alleged infringer may issue counter-notice including signature, description of removed material, explanation of why the material was not infringing, name, address, phone number and consent to being sued Upon receipt of counter-notice, SFA will repost the material
