IELIT – Image Enriched Learning in Tourism www.tourismimages.org.uk www.tourismimages.org.uk

The Database Software from Resourca They hold the images on their server Using Dreamweaver we set up a webpage interface Images are indexed by contributor, location and keyword as well as by tourism subject area Advantages: price, good technical support, stability Disadvantages, not as flexible as we’d hoped – some problems with the webpage interface Indexing issues

Contributors Mostly academics, but we welcome anyone with good images A list of wanted images will be on the webpage Images are emailed to the project manager Letter of agreement will be sent to the contributor but the website explicitly states that the copyright remains with the image creator Users are required to acknowledge the photographer and agree to terms and conditions of use Bicycle Hire, ZimbabweGondola, Venice Shakespeare Birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon John TribeAlastair ForbesDorin Festeu

Why use images? Tourism students, attracted to the subject by the opportunity to investigate places and cultures may be attracted to teaching methods which are not only text centred Village pump Zimbabwe, John Tribe PLA soldiers and Great Wall, China, John Tribe Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia, Lisa Hodgkins Anasazi ruins, Arizona, Lisa Hodgkins Delivery of supplies, Koh Phi Phi Thailand, John Tribe

Images provoke imagination and can evoke further questioning and creative thinking ( Buzan, 1990) Campsite with teepees, Lisa Hodgkins, 2005 Thai man selling Christmas gifts, John Tribe, 2003 Authenticity

Images are useful aids for learners who struggle with verbal-only teaching ( Myatt and Carter, 1979) Budget motel, Utah, Lisa Hodgkins, 2005 Advert for SAS Radisson Hotel, Lisa Hodgkins 2005 Hotel Markets

The use of pictures with text is particularly efficient in enhancing levels of comprehension (Levin, 1989) Sustainable Tourism (WTO) Make optimal use of environmental resources that constitute a key element in tourism development, maintaining essential ecological processes and helping to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity. Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter-cultural understanding and tolerance. Ensure viable, long-term economic operations, providing socio- economic benefits to all stakeholders that are fairly distributed, including stable employment and income-earning opportunities and social services to host communities, and contributing to poverty alleviation. all photographs by John Tribe l
