Who fought against the animals How the animals were imported How the animal gladiators were armed When the colsseum was built Why it was built How they treated the animals and gladiators.

Commodos an emperor was the only man to fight in the arena. But the people he fought were small and weak and he always won.

Exotic and fierce wild animals had to be imported to Rome from North Africa or the Near East. The usual method was to have bush beaters and men on horseback chase lions panthers and leopards and other large animals into an area surrounded nets and shields Once the animals were cornered they were backed into crates by beaters using torches and protected by shields.

They were armed with whips or spears They also had armor They also did have cloths too They were called bestiaries

Gladiatorial games began with an elaborate procession that included the combatants and was led by the sponsor of the games, the editor in Rome during the imperial period this usually was the emperor The morning's events might begin with mock fights such as this contest These would be followed by animal displays, sometimes featuring trained animals that performed tricks but more often staged as hunts in which increasingly exotic animals were going against or hunted and killed by humans

The manager of a gladiatorial troupe was called a lanista. He provided lengthy and demanding training in schools especially designed for this purpose and usually located near the great amphitheaters.
