2 What is LAPN? Local Authority Prevention Network Operating since 2006 Network of active local authorities working on waste prevention Share ideas, materials, case studies and experiences Nearly all local authorities have been involved, either directly or indirectly

Any initiatives: That are: making less waste; using less water, less energy or less materials Reusing, upcycling, repairing, swapping, exchanging, restoring; new life for old goods By the community, householders, businesses, schools, with your local authority, or other organisations

7 The EPA Tidy Towns Special Award Open to ANY community group - not just Tidy Towns See localprevention.ie/tidy-towns for – the application form – ideas Prizes NATIONAL 1ST PRIZE: €1000 2 National Runner-Up Prizes: €500 Each

8 EPA Waste Prevention Award 2014 TidyTowns Special Awards Overall winner: €1000 Ballon Improvement Group, Co Carlow for “An Siopa Glas” – Not just a community shop for reuse but also taking local business remnants (sawmills, fabric) to make products, promoting skills, being used for events, and strong links to the school – Money made by the shop is reinvested back in projects for the village.

9 EPA Waste Prevention Award 2014 HIGHLY COMMENDED: Blackrock Tidy Towns in Louth: –trade fair of energy saving companies and capturing use of these companies –Christmas food waste challenge –rainwater harvesting –holiday book swap

10 EPA Waste Prevention Award 2014 HIGHLY COMMENDED: Milltown Tidy Towns, Galway – Ran the Stop Food Waste challenge in conjunction with Galway County Council. – Also worked with a few local businesses

17 Stop Food Waste Master Composter Programme Going since 2009 Over 20 training sessions done nationally Changed the way we run them – More food waste – Design the subsequent work around communities Some of the towns worked with have won national awards and others county awards

22 The Stop Food Waste Challenge Average Irish Household is wasting ~20kgs a month – what about yours? Set a target of reducing this by ¼ Setting targets is a good way to focus the mind and gives people a number to aim for (and an improvement number to report!)
