8 What has changed in the way we teach at New Deal High School? Textbooks are a resource, not THE source. Less Worksheets More collaboration among staff Partnership with Texas Tech University Project-Based Learning Exploratory Learning Data-Driven Decision Making Technology Resources Externships Unity and Initiative

9 What are we doing? High School students teaching Elementary students Blueprint Requirement #3 The Academy includes grades 6-12 or actively works with feeder middle or elementary schools to develop student interest in STEM education.

10 The Task… HS students develop lesson plans for the elementary students HS students teach their lessons to the elementary students

14 What the high school students experience… Build a relationship with the younger kids Gain an in-depth knowledge of the content Develop multiple ways to communicate ideas Learn to collaborate with others Patience

15 What do the elementary student experience? Someone “new” explaining the concepts Big Brother/Big Sister Having fun learning new things at school Exposure to a STEM curriculum

16 Measuring the Results It’s a hit with the elementary students They remember activities and lessons from past years Increased interest in science and math Increased TAKS Scores
