2.  1. State your quote: According to …; Someone once said; Victor Frankl once said, “…”  If you know the author, provide the name.  If not, use according to… or someone once said…etc.  2. Analyze/explain the quote in your own words.  Here is where you give your interpretation of the quote.  When you read that quote, what meaning are you taking away?

3.  3. Give a general example using your quote. (In literature the theme of this quote can be found in many fiction novels.)  If you are using your own experience, discuss people/the world in general.  If you are using an example from literature, discuss literature as a whole in a general sense.  If you are using an example from movies, science, or history, again, discuss generally before moving into specifics.

4.  4. Start to give your example (Ex: In the novel the Great Gatsby, the characters display…)  Begin to discuss your example without giving away the specifics of your body paragraphs.  For example, if you are applying the quote to specific characters, discuss the characters in general before giving their specific names.  5. Thesis (In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby and Daisy…)  I should know exactly what you will discuss in your body paragraphs from your thesis.  Here is where you need to specific.

5.  Topic sentence:  What will you talk about in your paragraph?  I should read your first sentence and know exactly what you will be talking about in the body paragraph.  Compare the quote to your chosen example.  Remember- you are analyzing your example through the quote.  You MUST include specific details!!! Don’t be vague.  Concluding sentence:  You can’t just stop. You must wrap up the paragraph  One sentence to sum up what your point was.
