5 Dead Periods Fall Try Out Dead Period- August 1 through Sept. 1 Winter Try Out Dead Period- Oct. 30 through Dec. 1 Spring Try Out Dead Period- Feb. 12 through March 15 *There is a dead period during the last 5 student days each semester. *The weight room must also be closed during the last 5 student days of each semester. *Weight training/conditioning can take place during the dead periods (open to all and required of none). *Ind. Skill Development and Open Facilities are NOT allowed during dead periods. *On a given day, an athlete is limited to skill development, open facility or wt. Training/conditioning

6 NCHSAA Board Approved Items: 2 dead periods for the summer: (1) week of July 4 th (if 4 th on Saturday, week before; if 4 th on a Sunday, then it’s the week after) (2) week of the coaches clinic, which we are now in. We sent a clarification to athletic directors; hopefully they shared with you as coaches Students participating in summer workouts must have an up-to-date physical on file

7 Inclement/Hot Weather Guidelines Precautions must be taken to prevent heat-related problems. The following should be considered when scheduling practice: -Time of day -Intensity level of practice -Environmental conditions -Equipment worn High temperature and high humidity create a dangerous situation for athletes. However, a high humidity and low temperature can cause serious heat-related problems.

8 Inclement/Hot Weather Guidelines Water should be available in unlimited amounts throughout practice. Water/fluid replacement breaks are recommended each 20 or 30 minutes, depending on practice conditions. Each LEA must have a written policy pertaining to practice on days of extreme heat or early dismissal due to extreme weather conditions. Schools must also have a policy in place regarding lightning. **In addition, schools must have a plan/procedure for all emergency situations.**

9 RULES & REMINDERS Coaching Requirement: All coaches must still attend a required meeting with Athletic Director to view the updated eligibility power-point presentation prepared by NCHSAA Staff Concussion Rule: Gfeller-Waller Law must be observed; Yearly review and signatures required RTP updated; on the website EAP must be updated and shared with staff at your school Supposed to be reviewed by a licensed athletic trainer There is a list posted on the website—Health and Safety– of names of persons who can review your EAP

10 RULES & REMINDERS Sportsmanship: If student or coach is ejected or DQ’ed, still must complete the Star Sportsmanship course on-line before returning to competition in addition to serving the contest penalty. Remember: there is a $7/per person fee. Additionally, if a fighting ejection, head coach must take the “Teaching and Modeling Behavior” NFHS course; cost is $20; must be completed before coaching next game. Middle School Students: Are not allowed to practice and/or play against high school students during open facility or skill development sessions during school year

11 Sportsmanship ethical conduct by players and coaches shall be observed at all times. -1 st offense: point penalty -2 nd offense: loss of game -3 rd offense: default of match Disqualification may occur at any time. Please help by monitoring your players’ behavior throughout the season.

12 NCHSAA BOARD APPROVED ITEMS Coaches Education Requirement All non-faculty (non-teaching, certified personnel) and all newly hired coaches (new to your LEA, and has not passed the course) must complete and pass the NFHS “FUNDAMENTALS OF COACHING” certification course within sixty (60) days of hire. This is for head coaches, assistant coaches, including volunteers. If currently a non-faculty coach, certification course must be completed prior to first day of practice. Course is an online offering through the National Federation (NFHS). To access and complete the course, go to nfhslearn.com. Cost of course is $35 and is a one-time completion requirement to be nationally certified. NCHSAA Board of Directors has recommended 100% of coaching staff(s) complete the “FUNDAMENTALS OF COACHING” certification in three (3) years: Target date is August 1, 2015.

13 NCHSAA Board Approved Items: Now have a Transfer Policy; posted on web-site under school central: If you make a bona fide change of residence, no transfer waiver required for satisfying residence eligibility All non-traditional member schools will be treated as its own LEA LEA’s must have a policy to govern inter-system transfers; if no policy, then sit for 365 days All waiver requests from one LEA to another will be handled through NCHSAA

14 NCHSAA Board Approved Items: Standard contracts no longer required; but remains recommended for use especially in non-conference games; template on the website Board made some strong recommendations for the following: (SMAC recommendations) At least one member of coaching staff must take and pass NFHS 1 st Aid for Coaches, be CPR/AED certified and be present at all contests and practices If event has 3 or more teams in attendance must have LAT/Certified 1 st Responder on site

15 Reminders: Tennis Attire: Proper tennis attire is mandatory. Undergarments showing beneath playing shorts, running tights and alcoholic or tobacco advertisements, etc. are not appropriate attire. School uniforms (shirts, t-shirt, dress) or clothing suitable to a tournament atmosphere are expected. Appropriate t-shirts (school name, school color, mascot) are acceptable. All team members should dress in identical attire. Please pay special attention to the proper tennis attire!!!  Dual Team Regular Season Rules and Regulations and Dual Team Playoffs Regulations are the same. There is not a 25% rule for doubles teams Doubles teams must follow the position pairing equation (regular season and playoffs) even if challenges. Playoffs: once the line-up sheet has been submitted, any substitution in doubles must be a player of a lower ranking who is not already in the doubles line-up.

16 Regional Qualifiers Each conference determines their qualifiers **Note: Assigned numbers will not be posted until eligibility Summaries are in from schools prior to playoffs** IT IS IMPERATIVE FOR SCHOOLS TO ADVISE THE NCHSAA IF THEY HAVE DROPPED THEIR TEAM OR IF THEY HAVE ADDED A TENNIS TEAM.

17 Qualifiers to Individual State Championships the semi-finalists in both singles and doubles will qualify from the regionals to state. H owever, these players must participate in the semifinals and finals to advance (no exception)

18 Individual State Championships Matches will begin at 9:00 am on Friday -A predetermined draw will be used -A mandatory coaches’ meeting at 8:30 am -format: 2 out of 3 sets in both singles and double, with 10 minute break after split sets. If tied 6-6 in a set, a Set tie breaker is used (1 st to seven, win by two).

19 Dual Team State Championships Coaches Meeting: 9:00 am (2A & 3A) 12:00 noon (1A & 4A) Match Times: 9:30 am (2A & 3A) 12:30 pm (1A & 4A)

20 Line-Ups Coaches must exchange both singles and doubles line-ups simultaneously no later than 15 min. prior to the match. **Along with this line-up coaches must exchange a copy of the official ranking sheet that was approved by your conference and sent to the NCHSAA Office.

21 Line-Ups **Official line-up sheets will be posted on the website** **Players shall be ranked in order of ability** *In singles, in case a player is not available, all players must move up. An insufficient number of players shall default matches at the bottom of the line-up

22 Line-Ups *Singles players must have played 25% of the total team matches at a position in order to be seeded at that position unless there is an approved issue (injury, illness, etc.). Proof must be provided at the conference meeting prior to submitting the line-up sheet to the NCHSAA and the approved reason must be given on the line-up sheet. -#1 doubles positions (e.g., #1 and #3 =4) must add up to an equal or lower number than those paired at the number two doubles (e.g., #2 and #4=6). And the number two doubles pairing must add up to an equal or lower number than those paired at number-three doubles (e.g., #5 and #6=11).

23 Line-Ups **A #1 singles player may not play at #3 doubles** **Any player not in the top 6 will count as a #7 when considering placement in doubles** **A coach is permitted to substitute for any player in doubles as long as it is a lower ranked player not already in the doubles line-up. The doubles team with the substituted player is not subject to the doubles pairing regulation.

24 Singles (Dual Team Playoffs) **If players split sets in singles (2 out of 3 sets), a 10 point tie breaker (1 st to 10, win by two) will be played to decide the outcome of the match. A 3 min. break is allowed before the tie breaker, and player (s) may NOT leave the court during this time to confer with their coach.

25 Doubles (Dual Team Playoffs) doubles matches after singles (15 min. break) -10 game pro set is the format. In a tie at the end of the doubles pro set, the Set tie breaker will be played. (1 st to seven and win by two). If mutually agreed, the match may conclude as soon as one team wins by five points.
