The Benefits of Genetically Modified Foods (GMF) Updated January 2011 By Jack, Robert, Lauren and Madison P 8C Group C

Overview of Benefits Efficient Convenient Healthy Safe

Grown faster Farmer can grow larger crops Good for regions with frequent droughts and famines Grow in different conditions (e.g. winter, dry regions) Cheaper to produce through higher crop yields No more wasted food due to bugs Could potentially end world hunger and food shortages around the world More Efficient Food Production End World Hunger and Regional Inequalities

High in vitamins and nutrients Help prevent disease Can carry vaccines and medicines Safe to eat Tasty Significantly less pesticides Good for environment Free of insects and other pests Health Benefits

Eat more than one of your favourite food at the same time Do not rot as fast, longer shelf life Use of foods for production of other needed products (e.g. ethanol for energy, chemicals for pharmaceuticals) Can be grown in varied climates therefore you don’t need to transport long distance Convenience

Responding to the Concerns Unsafe with Unknown or unintended results A 2008 review published by the Royal Society of Medicine noted that GM foods have been eaten by millions of people worldwide for over 15 years, with no reports of ill effects. Similarly a 2004 report from the US National Academies of Sciences stated: "To date, no adverse health effects attributed to genetic engineering have been documented in the human population." Pest Immunity to Altered Organisms Scientific and medical advances will keep pace with ongoing challenges as they arise Ethical concerns & Improper Use of Knowledge Mankind continues to advance and through regulation and enforcement control can be ensured

Gm foods help countries that lack water Here is a video that discusses how gm foods can help less fortunate countries http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xWgNPmfAYk&feature=player_embedde
