Moodle was created on 20 th November 2005.

Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities. You can download and use it on any computer you have handy (including webhosts), yet it can scale from a single- teacher site to a University with 200,000 students. This site itself is created using Moodle, so check out the Moodle Demonstration Courses or read the latest Moodle Buzz. This information was gathered from http://moodle.org/

Moodle is a free software e-learning platform (also known as a Course Management System (CMS), or Learning Management Systems (LMS), or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)). It has a significant user base with 25,281 registered sites with 10,405,167 users in 1,023,914 courses (as of May 13, 2007). Moodle is designed to help educators create online courses with opportunities for rich interaction. Its open source license and modular design means that people can develop additional functionality. Development is undertaken by a globally diffused network of commercial and non-commercial users, spearheaded by the Moodle company based in Perth, Western Australia. This information was obtained from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moodle

Moodle has a large and diverse user community with over 330,000 registered users on its site alone, speaking over 70 languages in 196 countries (Moodle have more statistics here). The best place to start is Using Moodle, which is where the main international discussions are held in English, but Moodle have a variety of groups discussing other topics and in other languages. SOME of this information was gathered from www.moodle.org Just some of the people associated to make Moodle what it is today.

As you can see from the map above, most of the people who are involved in Moodle come from either Europe, Northern America and Southern America. This map copy and pasted off the Moodle website.

Here are a few interesting facts about the people behind Moodle that you possibly did not know. There are 75 people in the main Moodle development all originating from different countries. For these 75 people, this is their permanent job. Moodle can actually be translated into 32 different languages world wide.

WebCT is Moodels’ main competitor. WebCT, now owned by “Blackboard”, founded in 1995, is Moodles’ only main competitor. Moodle has no advantages nor disadvantages over its competitor WebCT however many people choose to choose Moodle because of its reliability and because of it's recommendation by Moodle customers.

The website is very welcoming to new-comers. It explains easily how you can take part and introduces you to the many people already using Moodle. To see how you could get involved with the thousands of people around the world using Moodle, search the website. http://moodle.org/

In my opinion, Moodle is a very good resource to have on your computer if you use it every day. However, I think it could be improved by making more hyperlinks on its homepage to more useful information because for most of this project I had to search the information in the search engine. I think that Moodle will also have many more members if it advertised more e.g. Designing pop-ups or T.V adverts.
