15. On August 6 th, 1945, the USA dropped the first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9 th, they dropped another, on Nagasaki. This photo was taken from one of the B-29 bombers that were used in the bombing. The mushroom cloud rose 18 kms. above the ground

17. On August 14, 1945 Japan announced its surrender. The USA allowed them to keep their Emperor, Hirohito, but put many restrictions on Japan. The USA took control of Japan, but they helped them rebuild their country.
