Some committed suicide instead of surrendering Japan began to get desperate, and resorted to a new weapon: suicide attacks from the air…

13 The Atomic Bomb

14 “Little Boy” & “Fat Man” The U.S. thought that Germany was developing their own atomic bomb, so they rushed to build one President Harry S. Truman believed that an atomic bomb could be used on Japan because it would save thousands of American lives The United States builds 2 atomic bombs, called “Little Boy” and “Fat Man”

15 On August 6 th, 1945, the USA dropped the first atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9 th, they dropped another, on Nagasaki. This photo was taken from one of the B-29 bombers that were used in the bombing. The mushroom cloud rose 18 kms. above the ground

16 In Total, 240,000 people were killed

17 On August 14, 1945 Japan announced its surrender. The USA allowed them to keep their Emperor, Hirohito, but put many restrictions on Japan. The USA took control of Japan, but they helped them rebuild their country.
