1 VIRUSES & BACTERIA Beth Walker CP Biology

2 VIRUSES A. What are the basic characteristics of viruses?
smaller than bacteria non-living only reproduce in a host cell

3 VIRUSES made up of DNA core & protein coat
cannot be treated with antibiotics

4 VIRUSES B. Examples HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) – cause AIDS
Influenza – the “flu” Variola causes smallpox – only virus ever eradicated from the Earth

5 VIRUSES - HIV

6 VIRUSES – Smallpox

7 VIRUSES C. Vaccination 1. Process 
Step #1: Small amount of live/dead virus particle is injected into the body Step #2: Immune System fights off the virus and leaves memory cells behind Step #3: Memory cells with “remember” the virus and fight it off before it makes you sick again, if you come in contact with the virus a second time

8 VIRUSES Vaccine “Idea”  Edward Jenner; vaccinated his son against smallpox with cowpox in the 1800’s Polio Vaccine – invented by Jonas Salk

9 BACTERIA A. What are the basic characteristics of bacteria?
prokaryotic cell (no membrane-bound organelles) circular DNA small & simple helpful & harmful cell walls of peptidoglycan

10 BACTERIA

11 BACTERIA - Tuberculosis
Mycobacterium tuberculosis

12 Bacteria – Strep throat
Streptococcus pyogenes

13 BACTERIA – Staph inefction
