3 Notes Chapter 17 part #2 Castro Comes to Power In 1959, Fidel Castro overthrew Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Castro then established a friendship with the (1)USSR and became a communist. The CIA began to monitor Cuba for fear of a Soviet attack. Cuba is only 90 miles south of Florida.

10 (3)Bay of Pigs Crisis On April 17th 1961, a (2)group of CIA trained Cuban exiles named La Brigada, invaded Cuba and tried to overthrow Castro. These exiles were armed and supplied with U.S. materials. Within two days most of the 1,400 men were killed or captured. This would begin an unfriendly relationship with Cuba.

17 Cuban Missile Crisis Due to the Bay of Pigs, the relationship between the U.S. and Cuba was terrible- showing (4)US as weak and disorganized Castro had a very good relationship with the USSR. During the summer of 1962, a (5)spy plane took pictures of nuclear missiles on Cuba. These missiles were put there by the USSR. President Kennedy ordered a (6)blockade of Cuba to stop the Soviets from bringing more nuclear missiles across the ocean.

19 Cuban Missile Crisis part 2 For about 13 days tensions were very high and nuclear war was near. An agreement was worked out between the U.S. and USSR: The U.S. was not to invade Cuba and remove nuclear missiles from Turkey. The (7)USSR agreed to remove all nuclear missiles from Cuba. This Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest our country has ever been to nuclear war.

20 (8)The Death/ Assasination of JFK On November 22 1963, JFK was in Dallas Texas working on his re-election. He was riding in a convertible with his wife and the governor of Texas. (9)Lee Harvey Oswald supposedly shot JFK from the 6th floor of the Texas School Book Depository Building. A few days later, a Chicago night club owner named Jack Ruby shot Oswald.

26 Oswald fled the scene He checked into his boarding house on 1026 Beckley. Officer J. Tippit stops on the street to talk to Oswald. Oswald shoots him 4 times to death

27 Arrested The Cops beat him up after Oswald resists arrest at the theatre.

28 Oswald transferred to another jail. Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub owner, shoots Oswald on live TV. LHO will never go on record why he did what he did. He is now dead.

30 Lyndon Johnson On board Air Force One, Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) took the oath of office. He was 55 years old when he became President. His wife was Claudia Taylor. Her nickname was Lady Bird. The election of 1964 was LBJ (D) vs. Barry Goldwater (R) -(14)Goldwater was opponent to LBJ and also sec. of treasury LBJ would win the election and quickly went to work on his plans for America.

31 The Great Society This (15)plan by LBJ to make improvements in America and (12)declare war on poverty: 1. Civil Rights Act of 1964- Barred discrimination. 2. Medicare and Medicaid- Helped the elderly with health care cost. 3. Head Start- Helped preschoolers who did not know how to color, etc. 4. Robert Weaver- First black cabinet member. 5. All started with the Economic Opportunity Act- designed to change and improve the quality in literacy and employment
