5 Benefits Of Semestering G With the different use of school time, students are able to pursue topics in-depth in more areas while learning the skills of the work force G Reduces the stress students may experience as students are now involved with seven classes each day

6 Semester Schedule

7 Graduation Requirements For Students Beginning Grade 10 in 2008 or later

8 Language, Communication and Expression. G3 language arts, one at each grade level

9 Arts Education 1 fine arts: art, dance, drama, or music

10 Science, Math,and Technology G2 mathematics G2 science (one from science, biology, chemistry, or physics) G2 other from science, math or technology

11 Personal Development and Society G1 credit from Physically Active Living 11, Phys Ed 10, Phys Ed 11, Phys Ed 12 or Dance 11

12 Social Studies 1 Global Studies: global geography 12 or global history 12 1 Canadian Content Course: Mi’Kmaq 10, African Canadian Studies 11, Canadian History 11

13 Different Credit Types

14 Advanced GThese courses are designed to meet the needs of students who have demonstrated an exceptional degree of academic ability or achievement.

15 Academic GThese courses are designed for students who expect to enter college, university or other post-secondary institutions.

16 Open GThese courses are not designed to meet the specific entrance requirements of any post- secondary institution. However, some institutions may accept individual courses as entrance requirements.

17 Graduation GThese courses are designed for students who wish to obtain a graduation diploma with a view to proceeding to employment or some selected area of post-secondary study.

18 Course Offering-Grade 10 Students must choose the equivalent of eight (8) full courses One should be a grade 11 course

19 Compulsory GENGLISH: –English 10 (academic) –English 10 Plus (academic) –Students taking English 10 Plus will receive two credits upon successful completion of this course. One is an English credit, the other is an elective credit.

20 Math –Math 10 Plus (academic) –Math Foundations 10 Plus (graduation) –Math Essentials 10 (graduation) Students taking Math 10 Plus or Math Foundations 10 Plus will receive two credits upon successful completion of these courses. One is a math credit; the other an elective credit.

21 Compulsory GSCIENCE: –Biology 11 (advanced) –Biology 11 (academic) –Science 10 (academic) –*Science 10A and Science 10B (academic)

22 Compulsory GFINE ARTS: –Visual Art 10 (academic) –Dance 11 (academic) –Music Band 10 (academic) –Drama 10 (academic) –Beginner Band 10 (Music Through Performance 10) - open –Instrumental Band 10 (Music Performance 10) - open

23 Compulsory Personal Development/Career Education 1 credit from Physically Active Living 11, Phys Ed 10, Phys Ed 11, Phys Ed 12 or Dance 11

24 Electives GSOCIAL STUDIES: It is suggested that they choose one of the following courses. –History 10 (academic) –Geography 10 (academic) –Geography of Canada 11 (graduation) –Mi’Kmaq 10 (academic) *Students who choose Mi’Kmaq 10 are not required to take Canadian History 11 in grade 11 unless they are taking Histoire Du Canada 11 for their Integrated French certificate.

25 Electives GFrench 10 (academic) GIntegrated French 10 (academic) *must also choose Histoire Ancienne 10 GBusiness Technology 11 (academic) GExploring Technology 10 (open) G*Family Studies 10A Food & Nutrition and Family Studies 10B Clothing & Textiles (open) GCareer Development ( graduation)

26 Electives: GLearning Strategies 10 (open) G*Must be recommended by a teacher to take learning strategies.

27 Registration Sheet

28 School Success GAttendance and participation play an integral part of successful study. GA required part of any course you choose will be regular attendance, class participation, and completion of assignments. GEffort and success go hand and hand.

29 Attendance GDaily attendance is required of all students. Absences may be excused by the school for good reason. GIt’s the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to call the school within five days of the absence to excuse his/her child. GIn the case of illness, the school reserves the right to insist on an excuse from a medical doctor.

30 Attendance GWhere attendance, in the opinion of the school is not satisfactory, one of the following courses of action may follow: –Parental interview –Ineligible to write a term exam or Nova Scotia provincial assessment.

31 Missed School Work GBeing legitimately absent from school does not excuse you from the school work that was covered while you were absent. GIt is the student’s responsibility to catch up on any missed school work

32 Missed School Work GIf the student is absent for an extended length of time (two weeks) for exceptional medical reasons, work packages may be arranged for the student. In these exceptional cases contact the school for specific arrangements. GIn most cases, the student will be expected to borrow notes and check with their teacher regarding missed assignments.
