AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 ATM as a Backbone for Internet Protocol EURESCOM P813: Technical Development and Support for European ATM Service Introduction Peter Feil, Deutsche Telekom Berkom GmbH Harrie van de Vlag, KPN Research John Boyles, Project Leader P813

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 Pan-European ATM Services Interoperability beyond PNOs’ borders More that just global alliances Managed ATM interconnectivity across PNOs and alliances One-stop shopping preferred What is needed?

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 situation P813: Current situation 146 MM Project start 23 June 98, completion December 99 Shareholders: AF, AU, BT, DT, FT, HT, IT, NL and NT Other informal company participation (NEC, Nokia, etc.) Project Redefinition in December 98 Commitment irrespective of ETNO ATM MoU Close cooperation with ETSI EASI project

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 P813EASI results use ATM Deployment DeliverablesStandards ATM introduction steering team (EASI/PMC) Contact: ATM4EU@eurescom.de Requirements Steering P813 and EASI

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 Scope of P813 Tasks OSS Network Management T3, T4 ATM Network User and Control T2,T5,T6 ATM Network A ATM Network A ATM Network A Transit NNI.P813 X.P813

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 P813 Project breakdown T2: Control and User Plane issues of ATM Services T3: Managing the ATM Network across PNO boundaries T4: Testing Support and Operating Manual T5: Unresolved Traffic Issues T6: ATM Performance

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 Task 2: U&C Plane and Management Plane issues of ATM Services PIR 2.1 Enhanced Leased-line services PIR 2.2 Market-driven VPN scenarios for voice and data PIR 2.3 ATM as a backbone for IP, thereby examining alternatives, e.g.: end-to-end connections hop-by-hop connections

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 Translation of services to ATCs

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 Task 2: U&C Plane and Management Plane issues of ATM Services Which ATC(s) can transport the higher layer service How will the higher layer service be implemented on the chosen ATC(s) ? Which relevant QoS parameters have to be translated to ATM QoS Parameters (in other words, have an impact on NNI.easi)? Will the management of the higher later service have effect on X.P813? If yes, how? Are the current specifications (under development) sufficient, or are additional guidelines for User&Control Plane or Management Plane necessary?

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 ATM as an IP-backbone (PIR 2.3) Routed IP backbone IP overlay network (over ATM) MPLS for IP/ATM integration IP over optical Networks Evolutionary path

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 IP over ATM benefits Flexible configuration of capacity and topology Enhanced traffic engineering features of ATM: traffic classes and QoS support traffic policing and shaping Redundancy/backup better monitoring and statistics network capacity planning

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 Next step within P813 P.I.R. 2.3 Identify all IP-over ATM overlay network options Select relevant options and necessary specs check whether the existing User, Control and Management plane specs. can optimally support these options advise ETSI/EASI on enhancements on the user & control plane if necessary advise P813 Task 3 on enhancements on the ATM management layer if necessary

AIMS’99 Workshop Heidelberg, 11-12 May 1999 Any Questions? IP  ATM “IP needs ATM to provide good Quality of Service networking”
