1 COLLABORATION BETWEEN RCE PENANG & RCE GWS 1 Munirah Ghazali RCE Penang@USM and Geoffrey Scott RCE GWS

2 Introduction to RCE PENANG 2 RCE Penang is one of the first seven pioneering Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) launched in Nagoya in 2005. Specific roles and objectives : 1.Develop and promote sustainable development training opportunities for school teachers, teacher educators and school administrators; 2.Develop and ESD strategy guide for local authorities; 3.Increase volunteer opportunities around sustainable development; 4.Coordinate the compilation of current ESD practices across Penang and neighbouring states in order to share and generate regional ESD good practices; and 5.Cultivate sustainable development competencies in the existing workforce.

3 Introduction to RCE GWS 3 RCE-GWS delivers educational responses to these challenges via:  Transformative education  Research  Engagement RCE-GWS identifies four major sustainability challenges for GWS:  Transitioning to a low carbon economy  Developing sustainable communities, including health, transport and housing  Ensuring agricultural sustainability and food security  Conserving biodiversity and river health

4 The Journey Begins 4 1) VISIT TO USM BY PROF GEOFFREY SCOTT, MS JEN DOLLIN Hosted by USM’s DVC Academic and International affair Agreement to collaborate on mutual interest 2) SERIES THE BUSINESS OF SUSTAINABILITY Host a series of e-Seminars on the above theme between our two RCEs and partners. 3) HOSTING THE ANNUAL YOUTH ECO SUMMIT In coordinating this, SOPA have proposed to pilot the first seminar as they have state of the art VC facilities and IT support.

INVOLVE 8 SECONDARY SCHOOLS, 3 PRIMARY SCHOOLS and 120 USM STUDENTS LIST OF SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAMME: 1.Sekolah Menengah Sains Tun Syed Sheh Shahabudin, 2.SMK Tinggi Bukit Mertajam, 3.SMK Penang Free 4.SMK (A) Al Mashoor (L) 5.SMK (A) Al Mashoor (P) 6.SMK Bukit Jambul 7.SMK Pauh Jaya, 8.MRSM Balik Pulau 9.SK Minden Heights, 10.SK Convent Green Lane 11.SK Sungai Pinang

11 Challenges 11 TECHNICAL & ICT Setting the CISCO teleconferencing line before the actual date Connection error when connecting international network and unavailability of the reliable technical staff during the actual date Understanding English between both countries (different slang and manners) Rapporteur between the institutions

12 Challenges 12 LOGISTIC Venue (room completed with teleconferencing equipments) unavailable due to full bookings. Traffic jam in the campus and one way route due to convocation week.

13 Challenges 13 FINDING SUITABLE DATES Suitable dates for both rce. Eg. We had the programme on USM’s convocation day and heavy internet traffic. Awareness of different time zone and changes. Eg. Day light saving hour in Australia.

14 Action 14 PLAN AHEAD 1.ICT TRIAL RUN/ PILOT - ensure all the equipment, software and reliable technical staff are available on the actual date of teleconferencing forum 2.ADVANCE PRESENTATION - record the video earlier than the actual date 3.SUITABLE DATES

15 Future Plan 15 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PLACEMENTS/EXCHANGES AND STAFF SABBATICALS Take longer to develop However we are very interested in exploring the possibility of the above. New areas of interest eg: social and business research and development projects with the local villages: RCE PENANG USM River health, biodiversity conservation and education for sustainability: RCE GWS & UWS
