National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org RFA: Data Sharing From the NCBC RFA: –Data sharing will be as important as software sharing…. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-03- 032.htmlhttp://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-03- 032.html –-...our definition of "the timely release and sharing"... no later than the acceptance for publication of the main findings from the final data set. http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02- 035.htmlhttp://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02- 035.html –The NIH will expect investigators … to make their research data available to the scientific community... –. data … for broader use … be free of identifiers … and variables that could lead to deductive disclosure of individual subjects.

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org RFA: Software Sharing …NIH does have goals for software dissemination… –…software should be freely available … –…permit the commercialization of enhanced or customized versions … –…include the ability of researchers outside the center and its collaborating projects to modify the source code and to share modifications … http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RM-04- 003.html

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org In other words… For NA-MIC: “If it’s not Open Source, it doesn’t exist!”

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Follow the NA-MIC Method Open the software from the very beginning –even in the early design stage All software is expected to rapidly evolve Make sharing, testing, and documentation part of your standard development process Only build on sharable code

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org Publications guidelines Issue: Need to balance cultures and requirements of different communities –Some agencies require acknowledgement of data –Some agencies measure performance by grant citation –Contributions can be made in many ways Action: Discussion of proposed guidelines for authorship of NAMIC work

National Alliance for Medical Image Computing http://na-mic.org IP Everything built into the NA-MIC kit needs to be free to all as a public resource. People can build their own IP on top of NA-MIC, but those efforts are outside the scope of the grant. Analogy: NA-MIC is building the public roadways; people can build their own houses on the road but the road itself is open to everyone.
