1 Signs, Signals and Pavement Markings
Chapter 3

2 Regulatory Signs Regulates and controls the movement of traffic. Tells drivers what to do and what not to do. The colors are usually red, white, black, green on white or white on black

3 Stop signs You must come to a complete stop for 3 full seconds. You must stop behind the white stop line!

4 Yield signs You must slow down and check oncoming traffic around you. *You may have to come to a complete stop!

5 Speed limit Signs Show you the maximum or fastest speed allowed on the roadway. Expressways may post minimum

6 *Alerts you of changing conditions or use of road ahead.
What are Warning Signs? *Alerts you of changing conditions or use of road ahead.

7 Railroad Crossbuck Communicates that a train is coming. You must stop regardless if lights are flashing.

8 Intersections Communicates what type of road the driver will face ahead. 2.7 million people where in an accident at an intersection.

9 Tells the driver if certain people or animals cross the road.

Gives information about roadways Tells mileage to certain destinations Identifies roadside services and recreational areas.

12 Route Markers Interstates that lead into city have 3 digits & begin with an odd number.

13 Interstate goes around the city
A three digit route that begins with an even number.

14 Even signs run east and west.

15 Odd signs run north & south.

16 Destination signs Signs that tell you where you are, what exits are coming, and how far the next exit is.

17 Mileage marker signs Tells you how far your destination is. How far is Sacramento?

18 Roadside service signs
Are indicated by the colors blue with white lettering. It tells you about gas, camping,hospital & more!!

19 International signs Are ones that you can understand without knowing another language. The meaning is conveyed by colors shapes, symbols and numbers.

21 Understanding yellow lines
Divide traffic traveling in opposite directions. Dashed= pass Solid=no pass

22 Understanding white lines
White line parallel to the roadway separate same direction traffic into lanes Solid white lines=discourage passing

23 Other solid white lines indicate
The side of the roadway 2. A bicycle lane on the right 3. A breakdown lane

24 Reversible lanes Double dashed lanes indicate Reversible lanes which means traffic is controlled by lights not the lane. Traffic flow can change to either direction depending on which lights are lit.

25 Shared left-turn lane Vehicles moving in either direction can use this lane to make left turns. *This is marked with solid and broken yellow lines with white arrows.

27 Traffic Signals Red=Stop Yellow=do not enter intersection stop if you can Green=Go when safe to do so.
