Why didn’t the players win? Write down three excuses that the speaker gives. Didn’t have enough time; didn’t have thousands of fans screaming; stayed up too late, and ran out of energy. Does the speaker really believe his or her own excuse? How do you know? No, because at the end of the poem the speaker admits that they just did not play well enough to win.
