2 Learning Intention: To familiarise you with the main features of an Ordnance Survey map.

3 Success Criteria: By the end of this session everyone should be able to: Explain the purpose of a map; Describe the basic layout and features of an Ordnance Survey map; Show which way is North on an OS Map; Calculate distances on a 1:50 000 OS map. Some of you may be able to: Describe the difference between True North, Grid North and Magnetic North.

5 What is a map?

6 What are maps? Maps are a way for us to see what the world looks like. It is a method we use to locate different things and to help us find our way from one place to another

7 Map 1: Where is this and what does it show?

8 Map 2: Where is this and what does it show?

9 Map 3: Where is this and what does it show?

10 Map 4: Where is this and what does it show?

11 Map 5: Where is this and what does it show?

12 So where are those places? Map 1 is the Mappa Geographica which is a map of the world and was drawn in 1703 Map 2 is Scotland and the map shows the main towns and roads Map 3 is a Satellite Image of the World taken in 2001  Map 4 is a street map of Dundee, drawn in 2005  Map 5 is a map of Angus showing the major towns and some of the local physical features, 2012
