Maria Montessori By Aaron and Kim

Maria’s Early Life Maria Montessori was born in Chiaraville, Italy On August 30, 1870 by father Alessandro Montessori and mother Renilde Stoppani. Even in early childhood, Montesorri showed strong leadership and intelligence in the classroom. At the age of 13, Maria entered a boy’s technical school against her father’s wishes but with her mother’s support.

Maria’s Education She entered the Regia Scuola Tecnica Michelangelo Buovarroti to study engineering but she soon discontinued her studies in that field. After her separation from engineering, Maria then entered the University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School and became the first female doctor in Italy 1894. Then in 1901, she studied Psychology and Philosophy at the University of Rome

Transition into Education After she received her degree in medicine, Maria became the Assistant Director of an asylum for “insane” children where she began to study the children she was working with. It was while she was working with those children when she began studying and observing the real needs and learning habits of these kids. While working at the asylum for a while, she went back to school in order to study anthropology and then was offered a job as a professor of anthropology for the University of Rome.

Transition into Education (cont.) She turned down the job offer in order to work with 40 children with working class families that were thought to be learning disabled. It was while she was working with these 40 kids that she began developing her educational theories and putting them into practice. Her methods were not only helping the children with school work and education but she also found that her methods were also helping them with lifelong skills that they were beginning to develop. When her students took a normal student examination, the results were above average and amazing for learning disabled children to get. This was the beginning of her teaching legacy.

Montessori's Educational Philosophies Maria believed that people go through phases in their life where they develop mentally in different ways called planes of development. She then began to develop her methods of teaching through which plane the children were on. She also believed that a prepared environment is key to help kids stimulate their natural urges to learn and natural instinct. She began bringing these concepts into the classroom where results were outstanding.

What is a Montessori Academy? A Montessori Academy is a school developed on the teaching and philosophies of Maria Montessori. The school surrounds their students in a prepared environment that helps stimulate the children’s natural urge to learn. Montessori Academy also believes in the concept of observation and indirect learning which helps the students feel as if they are learning on their own and not have to feel like their being lectured into learning.

Concepts of a Montessori Inner guidance of nature Freedom for self- directed learning Observation and Indirect teaching Absorbent minds of kids Work, Not Play Multi-age Grouping

Accomplishments in Education She created child friendly environments and tools Developed new learning tools for the classroom that were kid friendly Redefined what a teachers role is Redefined education as a whole Wrote several books on children and her method of educating them
