3 3/9 Introduction for Comments on AIIG  The AIIG proposed in X30-20061030-013R3 had pointed out good points; In evolved network, the AIIG will use common hardware platform. The different access technology will use common IP platform in AIIG.  However, AIIG supporting different network functionality in the same physical entity has the following limitations; Taking all functionalities into one AIIG including not necessary functions can be burden to do services. The inter-access L2 handoff within one AIIG causes limitation of network configuration to operators in the future. Operators are hard to choose multiple vendors to support their evolved network because the first vendor’s product will dominate all markets

4 4/9 Limitations of AIIG(1/2)  The AIIG has limitations in Inter-technology handoff. To do the handoff, technology dependent context must be transferred from one access technology to another access technology. Regarding authentication and charging, even though AIIG is used, the re-authentication and recharging with AAA have to happen. –Context related to authentication and charging with access technology has to be moved from one access technology to another access technology.  The AIIG also has Inter-AIIG handoff limitation The L2 handoff interface must be defined to support inter-AIIG L2 handoff

5 5/9 Limitations of AIIG(2/2)  There is a limitation to reuse Access Agnostic functions because the functions have different protocol usage and detail message fields.  Each software included in each access-technology seems to be the same, but practically, each CAN NOT be the same because it is being developed and each is dependent on its own technology. For examples, AAA interface includes its own standard capabilities and its own schemes developed by each technology. ROHC channel is established on the service flow in 3GPP or WiMAX while ROHC channel is established on top of the PPP in 3GPP2. It results re-establishment of ROHC channel during the inter-tech.

6 6/9 Proposal of ATE-GW (1/2)  ATE GW has the following functions: Layer 3 common functions 3GPP2 HRPD Rev’C specific functions Paging/Location management and Idle mode termination functions  ATE GW can be made based on Common Platform.  ATE GW supports Layer 2 handoff with Legacy PDSN and other access technologies. Interface between PDSN and ATE GW must be standardized to support L2 handoff  ATE GW supports Proxy Mobile IP.  New services or enhancements can be easily applied depending on each access technologies.  Additional features are easily added into AT -GW without any impact on legacy PDSN.
